Vietnam has shaken up its university system in a move the education ministry describes as a sweeping reform, while European campuses in Innsbruck and Weimar face leadership transitions marked by both orderly succession and open friction. Across the Atlantic, several US universities have filled top administrative roles, and Germany’s chronic teacher shortage adds a structural challenge to the sector.

Vietnam’s Mass Reshuffle

On June 5, Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training announced what it called a decisive step: 153 leadership appointments across 51 of the 54 public universities and vocational training institutions under its supervision. Minister Hoang Minh Son explained the move as implementation of Resolution 71, a directive to overhaul management methods. The scale of the change—touching nearly every institution in the ministry’s direct portfolio—has been described by local education analysts as seismic.

Replacement Race in Innsbruck

Alongside that Asian development, the University of Innsbruck is preparing to pick a new rector. A search committee has ranked Vice Rector Gregor Weihs as the top candidate, followed by Anna Buchheim and Pedro José Marrón. The Senate will hold hearings with eight shortlisted applicants on June 17 and 19. Current Rector Veronika Sexl’s term runs until February 2027, but the university wants the election wrapped up by early August 2026, with the new leader starting on March 1, 2027. That leaves more than eight months between selection and formal installation—a deliberately long handover phase.

Weimar: President and Chancellor Under Pressure

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar presents a more turbulent picture. In early June, news emerged that the university assembly is deliberating whether to remove Chancellor Horst Henrici. According to insiders, the president’s position is also seen as insecure. The governing board appears deeply divided, and no quick resolution is expected.

US Provost Appointments Keep Rolling

Across the Atlantic, three state universities have cemented academic leadership. The University of Northern Colorado appointed Nancy Marchand-Martella as provost. At Colorado State University, Lise Youngblade was promoted from interim to permanent provost. Western Oregon University named Randi Storch interim provost. These moves are part of a broader wave of administrative changes in American public higher education.

PwC Buys Into Private Digital University

While public universities grapple with personnel politics, the private sector is seeing deeper ties between business and academia. The consultancy PwC has acquired 49.9% of the shares in the Digital Business University of Applied Sciences (DBU). The transaction’s stated goal is expanding digital education offerings; PwC also plans to use the platform’s microlearning courses for its own staff. The deal was handled internally by PwC Legal.

NRW Teacher Workforce Hits Record, Still Falls Short

Germany’s most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia, reported a record high of over 166,000 filled teaching positions as of June 1. Yet more than 4,800 posts remain vacant. The state government points to major investments and tens of thousands of permanent hires since 2022. Whether that pace closes the gap long term remains an open question for education policymakers.

Amrop and Others Expand Education-Focused Recruitment

The market for placing senior academic leaders is heating up. Recruitment firm Amrop named Fredy Hausammann its new chairman at the end of May. Executive search firms Spencer Stuart and PINKTUM have also brought in new experts for consumer goods and international sales leadership—a signal that competition for top talent in education-adjacent consulting is intensifying.
