Half of all AI-assisted job interactions now happen outside 9-to-5, Adecco data shows

The way people look for work is shifting dramatically. According to figures from staffing giant Adecco, 51% of AI-mediated interactions with job candidates now occur outside standard office hours — a sign that recruiting technology is bending to the rhythms of modern life, not the other way around.
Adecco has processed over 1.2 million AI-driven candidate touchpoints across ten countries. Those interactions included roughly 250,000 automated interviews for 50,000 open positions. The payoff: time-to-hire has been cut in half, and fill rates now exceed 80%.
The company is also rolling out a dedicated AI agent to help reassign workers internally, following a successful pilot in Latin America.
Those numbers reflect a broader surge in corporate AI adoption. A survey by Box found that the share of companies with an advanced AI maturity level jumped from 8% to 64% within a single year. 83% of firms surveyed said they are already using AI agents, and four out of five report a return on investment of at least 10%.
Demographic pressures are accelerating the trend. JobLeads projects that by 2036 nearly 20 million baby boomers will have retired, shrinking Germany's workforce by roughly 4.3 million people. The hardest-hit states include Saarland, Saxony and Bavaria, where talent pipelines are already thinning.
Companies are also automating areas beyond recruitment. On June 17, software firm isolved unveiled six new autonomous AI agents for payroll and benefits administration, capable of real-time audits and advice on workplace perks. Around the same time, Vozzo AI Labs deployed AI voice agents for a trainee program at the State Bank of India — the systems train live in Microsoft Teams and support six Indian languages.
Meanwhile, the tooling ecosystem is expanding fast. Microsoft introduced “Copilot Cowork”, an agent designed to automate emails, research and other routine tasks. Databricks released “Genie One”, which gives departments access to corporate data through a knowledge graph linked to Slack and SharePoint.
These changes are reshaping what employers look for in people. A PwC report notes that roles with an AI component command wage premiums of up to 62%. Job growth in professional occupations exposed to AI is running at double the rate of less tech-heavy fields. For entry-level positions heavily influenced by AI, employers demand leadership skills seven times more frequently than for comparable non-AI roles.
OpenAI is betting on the skills gap. The company is investing $150 million into a partner network with the goal of training 300,000 certified AI transformation consultants by the end of 2026.
