A new analysis of AOK health-insurance data reveals that Germany's workforce is increasingly vulnerable to extreme temperatures. On days surpassing 30 degrees Celsius, sick-leave rates climb by an average of 3.5 percent. During heat waves that stretch for seven consecutive days, the figure jumps to 10.8 percent.

The study points to construction, manufacturing, and agriculture as the sectors hardest hit. Older employees and those with chronic pre-existing conditions also suffer disproportionately. Occupational-health experts now describe rising heat as a structural challenge for corporate wellness programs, arguing that investments in preventive measures generate measurable returns by avoiding lost labor costs.

Alongside climate-driven absences, German labor law contains specific protections that employers must observe. Current guidelines from the SoVD Schleswig-Holstein clarify the rules around sick pay. When workers are receiving sickness benefits, health insurers sometimes urge them to actively expedite rehabilitation appointments. However, the only legal obligation is to submit a timely application. Insurers may not threaten to cut off benefits if a patient fails to influence appointment scheduling, especially when doing so would be unreasonable.

One particularly robust safeguard applies to employees who fall ill after donating an organ. Their employer continues to pay full wages, and the organ recipient’s health insurance refunds the gross salary plus all social-security contributions. If the absence exceeds six weeks, the donor receives sickness benefits at 100 percent of net earnings — capped at the contribution-assessment ceiling.

Separately, the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern enacted a new higher-education law on Wednesday. The legislation grants doctoral-degree rights to research-strong departments at universities of applied sciences. It also allows the University of Rostock and its university medical center greater autonomy over construction projects, designating them as project owners. The law enshrines student participation and codifies open access to research data, aiming to permanently secure the transparency of scientific findings.

On the same day, the University of Rostock’s Academic Senate discussed performance-based budget allocation for 2026 and steps to strengthen institutional resilience. Leadership urged managers to hold annual employee talks this summer — conversations mandated by an existing works agreement that clarify tasks, development potential, and team collaboration. At the end of May, a rectors’ retreat on artificial intelligence drew over 50 participants who drafted guiding principles for the use of AI in research and administration.

Beyond structural reforms, individual workplace health can also be supported directly. Statutory health-insurance funds offer subsidies for certified prevention courses, ranging from 150 to 300 euros per year depending on the provider.
