Heidelberg Accelerates Digital Strategy with Jetfire 50 and AI Chat, but Transformation Costs Weigh on Outlook
19.06.2026 - 16:14:17 | boerse-global.deHeidelberger Druckmaschinen is pushing ahead with its transition from a cyclical hardware manufacturer to a provider of digital services and subscriptions. Two concrete milestones in recent weeks underscore the pace of the overhaul: the first French installation of its Jetfire 50 digital press and the launch of an artificial intelligence-driven analytics tool.
The Jetfire 50 has gone live at PERFECTMIX, a printing services company in Saint-Laurent-du-Var. The machine integrates with Heidelberg’s existing “Prinect” workflow, allowing customers to blend offset and digital production in a single process — a response to growing demand for flexible, short-run printing. Further installations are scheduled across northern Europe and Asia.
On June 18, Heidelberg introduced the “AI Performance Chat” within its portal. The tool enables users of the “Print Shop Analytics” package to query production data via voice commands, bypassing manual dashboard navigation. The aim is to help printing plant operators spot efficiency bottlenecks more quickly, linking hardware sales with subscription and AI services to reduce reliance on new machine cycles.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Heidelberger Druckmaschinen?
The transformation, however, comes at a steep price. Management expects a net loss in the low double-digit millions for the 2026/27 financial year, driven by heavy investment in defence technologies. Free cash flow is also forecast to turn negative. To finance the transition, Heidelberg secured a €436 million syndicated credit facility that runs until 2030.
The share price reflects the market’s cautious stance. At around €1.53–€1.54, the stock trades roughly 40% below its 52-week high of €2.54 and has shed about 24% of its value since the start of the year. On a brighter note, the equity has recovered roughly 10% over the past 30 days, though it still lags the 200-day moving average of €1.74.
Whether the Jetfire 50 and the AI Performance Chat can meaningfully lift revenues will become clearer with the next quarterly figures. For now, Heidelberg remains a transformation story with secured liquidity — but an uncertain payoff.
