Heidelberger Druckmaschinen is putting investors through a gruelling test of patience. The 170-year-old printing press manufacturer is simultaneously pivoting toward artificial intelligence, a Ukrainian defence partnership, and a lower-cost production base in China and the Balkans — all while warning of a double-digit million euro net loss for the current fiscal year. The shares, last trading at €1.52, have shed roughly a quarter of their value since January and sit 40% below their 52-week peak of €2.54.

The dividend, a reliable fixture for generations of German retail shareholders, has been axed entirely. Management will ask the annual general meeting on 23 July 2026 to approve a zero payout. The justification is stark: the group expects a net loss in the tens of millions, driven largely by the upfront costs of entering the defence industry.

To stem the bleeding in the core printing business, Heidelberg has already signed more than 550 severance agreements with employees. Its bestselling model, the Speedmaster CX 104, will be built entirely at the company’s plant in Qingpu, China, and shipped globally from there. Assembly of finishing systems and selected components is also being expanded to lower-cost operations in North Macedonia. The moves are designed to compress manufacturing expenses and lift profitability — the board wants the operating margin to climb to at least 7% in the current year.

The defence foray is the riskiest and most expensive element of the transformation. Through a joint venture called ONBERG, formed with a Ukrainian partner, Heidelberg plans to produce drone countermeasure systems in Brandenburg. Medium-term revenue from this defence vertical is targeted at €300 million, though today it accounts for less than 2% of group sales. The heavy investment needed to reach that scale is a key reason for the net loss warning.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Heidelberger Druckmaschinen?

Meanwhile, the company is not neglecting the digital side of its future. On Wednesday 24 June, it will host a presentation under the “HEIDELBERG AI” banner, unveiling new digital assistants for the print shop. Investors will be watching closely to see whether the software-driven margin story can offset the capital-intensive defence ramp-up.

The stock’s technical picture reflects the uncertainty. Over the past 30 trading sessions the shares have clawed back nearly 9%, nudging them just above the 50-day moving average of €1.48. The relative strength index of 55 points to a neutral zone — neither overbought nor oversold. But the 200-day moving average sits at €1.74, roughly 13% above the current price, underscoring the longer-term downtrend. The €1.48 level is seen as near-term support; if it holds, the recent recovery could have legs.

Analysts are deeply split on where the stock is heading. Warburg Research rates the shares a “Hold” with a price target of €1.40 — implying further downside. Baader Bank, by contrast, sees fair value at €2.40, almost 60% above the current level, betting that the restructuring and defence pivot eventually pay off.

Heidelberger Druckmaschinen at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The calendar offers two crucial checkpoints after the AI event. The AGM on 23 July should provide clarity on the production relocation programme and the defence strategy. Then, on 19 August, first-quarter results for the 2026/27 fiscal year will reveal whether the margin plan is gaining traction — or whether the company’s twin gambles on drones and digital assistants are proving too heavy to lift.
