Highland Critical Minerals is attempting to turn the page on a turbulent period marked by an unexplained stock surge and an inconclusive initial exploration campaign. The junior explorer now pins its hopes on an airborne geophysical survey over the Church lithium project in northwestern Ontario, aiming to cut through the geological overburden that thwarted earlier ground-based work. The success or failure of that summer program will determine whether the recent market excitement has any geological foundation.

The stock’s wild ride has already drawn the attention of Canadian regulators. In mid-May, the company confirmed to the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) that it was aware of no material change in operations that could explain a 355% rally over five trading sessions. The inquiry, the second such request in six months, underscores the disconnect between price action and operational reality. Shares closed at C$0.61 on May 8 after the surge, then slid to C$0.30 by the week ending May 27 — still well above the all-time low of C$0.13 reached in late April, but far from the November 2025 record of C$5.82. The average weekly swing over the past three months has been 29%.

At Church, the company is pivoting hard. A previous mobile-metal-ion soil survey failed to produce meaningful lithium anomalies, largely because thick overburden and vegetation obscured the bedrock. This summer, a helicopter-borne campaign combining radiometric mapping and LiDAR will seek to penetrate that cover and define drill-ready targets. The focus is on lithium-cesium-tantalum (LCT) pegmatites, the type of mineral system that can host economically significant lithium mineralization. The 5,526-hectare project sits in a region where such pegmatites are known but poorly tested.

The work is fully funded. In April, Highland closed a non-brokered flow-through private placement, issuing 1.6 million shares at C$0.25 each for gross proceeds of C$400,000. The capital is earmarked for qualifying Canadian exploration expenditures on critical minerals. Tax benefits will flow to investors through the end of 2026, with the spending commitment running until the end of 2027. For a junior explorer without deep pockets, that funding eliminates the need for an immediate capital raise and allows the summer program to proceed on schedule.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Highland Critical Minerals?

Beyond Ontario, the portfolio includes the Sy property in Nunavut’s Yathkyed Lake greenstone belt. The 3,345-hectare claim block is geologically analogous to the Meadowbank and Meliadine gold deposits, and historical surface samples have yielded grades as high as 38.8 grams per tonne gold. More than 40 high-grade gold occurrences have been documented along roughly 30 kilometres of strike length. The economics of any future work there could be transformed by the federal government’s commitment of up to C$50 million to the Grays Bay Road and Port Project — a 230-kilometre all-weather road and deepwater port that would slash access costs. Highland has not yet announced a field program for Nunavut, and no timeline is in place.

The company’s focus sharpened in December 2025, when it spun out its Red Lake gold assets into a separate entity, Highland Red Lake Gold Corp. Highland’s stake in that vehicle dropped from roughly 73% to 17%, leaving the Church lithium project and Sy gold property as the two core holdings. Management has described the restructuring as a move to reduce portfolio dispersion and concentrate on priorities.

For the fiscal year 2025, Highland posted a net loss of approximately C$559,000. The company is targeting a NI 43-101 compliant resource estimate by the end of 2026, a milestone that would shift the narrative from exploration story to something more concrete.

Highland Critical Minerals at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The Church geophysics program now represents the first real test of the new strategy. The data it produces will either validate the airborne pivot and point toward a drilling campaign or leave the company still searching for the geological anchor that its runaway stock price has yet to justify.
