Despite securing a final patent victory against Chinese rival Innoscience and announcing a strategic partnership for AI data center power infrastructure, Infineon shares continued to slide on Monday, caught in a broader semiconductor selloff and geopolitical uncertainty. The stock closed at €69.83, shedding 4.27% on the day as a historic plunge in SK Hynix's shares triggered a sector-wide exodus from chip names.

The German chipmaker and South Korea's LS Electric signed a memorandum of understanding on July 10 to jointly develop direct-current power solutions for AI data centers and future grid networks. Infineon will supply the power semiconductors while LS Electric handles system integration. The technology — including solid-state transformers and solid-state switches with microsecond response times — promises to reduce size and weight by roughly 30% compared with conventional alternatives. The partnership targets the surging energy demands of modern AI clusters, a trend underscored by Meta Platforms' expansion of its "Hyperion" data center in Louisiana to 5 gigawatts of capacity, with investment already exceeding $50 billion and total project costs potentially topping $250 billion.

On the same day, the U.S. International Trade Commission confirmed its final ruling that Innoscience infringes an Infineon patent related to gallium-nitride (GaN) technology. Products covered by the ban will be barred from import and sale in the United States. The decision adds to a string of German court rulings — dating back to August 2025 and including recent judgments in June and July 2026 — that have blocked Innoscience's products in Germany and awarded damages. Infineon says it holds roughly 450 GaN patent families.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Infineon?

However, the patent battle is far from one-sided. In late May, a Chinese court in Suzhou barred Infineon from selling ten products from its CoolGaN G3 series in China, finding they infringe an Innoscience patent. Damages were set at roughly €1.2 million. Infineon's appeal failed, but the company described the impact as limited. The ruling highlights the intensity of competition in the GaN market: Innoscience led the segment with a 29.9% share in 2024, while Infineon held 10.3%.

The immediate trigger for Monday's decline was a 15% crash in SK Hynix's shares after the South Korean memory chip maker reported earnings forecasts that fell short of market expectations. The rout spread rapidly, dragging the KOSPI index down roughly 9% and triggering a 20-minute trading halt. European semiconductor stocks, including Infineon, were swept into the downdraft. Geopolitical tensions related to Iran also contributed to risk aversion, compounding the sector rotation away from AI-linked chip values.

Short-term technicals reflect the pressure: Infineon now trades 6.52% below its 50-day moving average of €74.70, and the stock has lost 13.84% over the past 30 days. The Relative Strength Index of 41.3 suggests neither oversold nor overbought conditions. Annualized 30-day volatility stands at a high 70.85%, underscoring the nervousness gripping the sector.

Yet the longer-term picture remains starkly more positive. Infineon shares have surged 82.3% since the start of the year and 86.3% over the past 12 months. They still trade more than 43% above their 200-day moving average of €48.49. The company's market capitalization stands at €94.38 billion. Infineon targets €2.5 billion in revenue from AI-related business in fiscal 2027, and Gartner recently called the group "the company to beat" in power semiconductors for AI data centers. Unlike SK Hynix and other memory-focused players, Infineon operates in logic and power semiconductors — a segment that continues to benefit from robust demand, as demonstrated by TSMC's 67.9% year-on-year revenue jump in June. The structural drivers remain intact, even if the near-term mood has turned cautious.
