The chipmaker is pushing into the future of humanoid robotics just as its gallium nitride intellectual property comes under attack in China — a split-screen reality that captures both the opportunity and the risk embedded in Infineon’s current market position. Shares, which have more than doubled this year, closed at €82.01 on Friday, hovering just below the all-time high of €89.67, even as the company absorbs a legal setback in the world’s largest semiconductor market.

Infineon officially launched its Startup Challenge 2026 this week, with selected teams receiving hardware on June 18 and 19 for projects involving digital twins and so-called artificial skin. The skin relies on capacitive and magnetic sensors, while other components use radar and laser projection to let robots perceive their surroundings. WĂĽrth Elektronik and Rutronik are on board as technology partners. Winners will present their developments in Munich at the end of October, following a Demo Day in Graz, Austria, in early October.

The robotics push sits alongside a bitter patent dispute over GaN (gallium nitride), a critical material for energy-efficient power electronics in data centres and electric vehicles. On Thursday and Friday, the Munich I Regional Court ruled in two more cases in Infineon’s favour, barring rival Innoscience from manufacturing, selling or marketing certain GaN products in Germany and ordering the Chinese company to pay damages. Those were the third and fourth legal defeats for Innoscience in this series.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Infineon?

Yet almost simultaneously, the Supreme People’s Court of China upheld a sales ban against Infineon for specific GaN products on the Chinese market, affirming a verdict from the Suzhou Intermediate People’s Court dated May 27, 2026. Innoscience was awarded damages of roughly 10 million yuan (€1.3 million). The divergent outcomes on two continents underscore how fragmented the global patent landscape has become for next-generation chip technology.

Despite the China ruling, Infineon’s AI-related revenue pipeline remains robust. The company expects around €1.5 billion in sales from power solutions for AI data centres in fiscal 2026, rising to approximately €2.5 billion in fiscal 2027. Those forecasts help explain why the stock has surged nearly 142% over the past twelve months and trades far above its 200-day moving average of €44.99. Still, the annualised volatility of the shares stands at 74%, a reminder that the rally rests on a risky footing. The startup programme, while strategically important for product development, generates no direct revenue.

For now, management is leaning heavily on transparency to maintain investor confidence. Alexander Foltin, head of finance, treasury and investor relations, took first place in the “Best Overall Investor Relations (Large Cap)” category at the IR Impact Awards – Europe 2026, sharing the “Best Investor Relations Officer (Large Cap)” prize with team lead Daniel Györy. In a period when patent battles ricochet across time zones, clear communication becomes a competitive advantage.

All eyes will turn to Munich on August 5, when Infineon reports third?quarter results. The numbers will provide the next hard test of whether the operational momentum — second?quarter revenue of €3.81 billion and an operating margin of 17.1% — can withstand the legal headwinds from the East and the volatility baked into the stock.
