Infineon Shares Extend Slide as Shanghai's Lithography Ambitions Rattle Chip Sector

Infineon shares tumble 3% amid global semiconductor rout after Chinese firm's DUV lithography breakthrough threatens ASML's monopoly, with AI spending doubts adding pressure.

The sell-off in Infineon shares shows no signs of letting up, with the stock shedding another 3.03 percent on Tuesday to close at €60.80. That extends a brutal run that has now wiped roughly 32 percent from the 52-week high of €89.67 reached in early June. Over the past 30 trading days alone, the equity has cratered 21.03 percent — a painful reversal for a name that was riding high just weeks ago.

What's driving the latest leg lower isn't anything specific to the Munich-based chipmaker. Instead, the entire semiconductor complex is reeling after a report from US industry publication The Information detailed a breakthrough by a Shanghai-based company in immersion deep-ultraviolet (DUV) lithography systems. Until now, Dutch giant ASML has held an effective monopoly on this critical chipmaking technology. The Chinese firm plans to build five machines this year and 20 more in 2027, with domestic customers like SMIC, Hua Hong and ChangXin Memory Technologies lined up as buyers.

The market's reaction was swift and brutal. Investors fear that if China can scale production of these systems, foreign chipmakers and equipment suppliers could see their market share erode over time. The specter of a fundamental re-rating of global supply chains sent semiconductor stocks tumbling across both the US and Europe.

The contagion spread to Asia on Tuesday, with South Korea's KOSPI index — heavily weighted toward Samsung and SK Hynix — taking a beating. SK Hynix shares briefly plunged around 10 percent, amplifying the sense of panic rippling through the sector.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Infineon?

Adding to the anxiety is growing skepticism about the massive AI infrastructure spending by US tech behemoths. Market participants are increasingly questioning whether the enormous capital outlays from Microsoft, Alphabet and Meta for AI data centers will pay off as quickly as hoped. With quarterly results from those companies due later this week, caution has gripped the entire chip ecosystem.

For Infineon, the next major test comes on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, when the company reports fiscal third-quarter earnings. The pivotal question: can its power semiconductor business for AI data centers offset persistent weakness in the industrial and automotive segments? Recent downbeat guidance from rival STMicroelectronics, which flagged softness in precisely those areas, has done little to inspire confidence.

Chart watchers see little reason for optimism. The stock now trades 19 percent below its 50-day moving average of €75.27. All eyes are turning to the 200-day moving average at €50.25 — a level that could come into play if the selling pressure continues. Technical indicators have been flashing oversold readings, which has drawn some opportunistic buyers, but so far no sustained rebound has materialized.

Infineon at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Despite the recent carnage, Infineon's year-to-date performance remains impressive at a gain of 66.18 percent. The company's structural exposure to electrification, industrial automation and data center infrastructure has made it more resilient than pure-play memory chip makers. But for now, the market is focused on the near-term headwinds — and the next few trading sessions, shaped by both competitor earnings and the evolving China lithography story, will determine whether the stock can find a floor or head even lower.
