A double shift is remaking Germany’s labor market: while the insurance sector undergoes a structural transformation with fewer registered brokers and new digital platforms, the broader economy is locking in remote and hybrid work as a permanent feature. Data from mid-July 2026 paint a picture of sectoral winners and losers, with e-commerce leading the charge for location-independent roles.

E-commerce remains the standout for flexible work. Over 9,100 positions with a home-office option were listed on specialist job portals in July. Of those, roughly 7,651 were full-time and about 2,015 were part-time. Companies actively hiring include the Schuback GmbH in LĂĽbeck and MONARI GmbH in Gronau, both seeking senior E-Commerce Management staff.

The marketing sector, by contrast, is cooling. Index Research figures for the second quarter of 2026 show 78,343 open vacancies against roughly 63,000 job seekers. That’s down from 88,096 in the first quarter and 86,341 a year earlier. One persistent bright spot: demand for candidates with artificial intelligence expertise continues to climb.

Even industries long tied to physical locations are loosening their grip on office attendance. Construction firm Strabag in Stuttgart, the Käuffer Gruppe in Frankfurt, and GEBRÜDER PETERS in Neu-Ulm now advertise hybrid or fully remote options. In technology, specialized roles like DevOps engineers are increasingly marketed with flexible models—tkms Atlas Elektronik GmbH in Wedel is one example. The Westermann Gruppe, an educational publisher, offers over 40 positions with home office and 30 vacation days across its sites in Braunschweig, Cologne, and Würzburg.

Part-time remote work is gaining traction, with over 860 such positions registered in June 2026. About 82 percent of those are fully location-independent. Active employers include the Talentspring Marketing Academy and DBB DATA Steuerberatung. At the same time, inclusive job platforms are growing in importance. In Switzerland, EnableMe myAbility.jobs focuses on placing people with disabilities. Companies such as Novartis, Takeda, and Volg use these channels for targeted remote listings. The public sector is also involved: Bern’s cantonal police are hiring part-time scientific staff for risk management.

Insurance is undergoing its own ecosystem shift. The number of registered insurance intermediaries in the DIHK register fell to 178,791 at the start of 2026. While tied agents are shrinking in number, interest in independent broker roles is rising. Technology is accelerating the trend: a system for digital referral business was introduced in mid-July, using a software-as-a-service model to acquire new customers.

Personnel moves reflect this transformation. At GVV Versicherungen, Ralf Krause-Maier took over the new sales and marketing division at the beginning of July. OFFIS e.V. in Oldenburg advertised its managing director position in mid-July. Neodigital is sharpening its focus on an insurance-as-a-service platform, merging customer portfolios with partners including Adam Riese. Taken together, these developments show that location flexibility and technological innovation are advancing in lockstep, forcing leadership teams across industries to rethink strategy.
