Intuitive Surgical's Da Vinci 5 Surge Can't Mask the Valuation Earthquake
Published on 07/22/2026 at 16:42 | Redaktion boerse-global.deThe math at Intuitive Surgical has rarely looked more contradictory. The company placed 468 new Da Vinci systems in the second quarter, with 246 of them — more than half — belonging to the next-generation Da Vinci 5 platform. That adoption rate has surprised even the optimists, with early hospital data showing utilization comfortably ahead of older models. The installed base of all Da Vinci systems now stands at 11,710 units, up 12 percent year-over-year, while the Ion lung-biopsy platform added 36 percent more procedures and grew its installed base 21 percent to 1,096 systems.
Yet the stock closed Monday at €299.60, its lowest level since early 2024, before staging a modest recovery to €310.15 — a gain of 1.04 percent on the day. That rebound does little to alter the broader picture: the shares have lost 36.59 percent since January and 28.80 percent over the past twelve months. From the January high of €516.50, the decline now approaches 40 percent.
The Recurring Revenue Machine Keeps Humming
The operational engine remains formidable. Revenue rose 19 percent to $2.9 billion in the quarter, extending a streak of consistent double-digit top-line growth that has now run for more than a year. Roughly 85 percent of total revenue now comes from instruments, accessories and service — recurring income streams that do not depend on new system placements. In the first half of 2026, those operations generated $1.8 billion in free cash flow, a 71 percent jump from the same period a year earlier.
The cash pile has swelled to $8.6 billion, giving the company ample firepower for R&D and potential acquisitions. A new FDA application for a robotic GI endoscope is already in the pipeline, part of a broader push to diversify beyond the core surgical franchise.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Intuitive Surgical?
Two Headwinds That Won't Blow Over
Chief Financial Officer Jamie Samath flagged two specific pressures during the earnings call. The first is the expiration of enhanced health insurance subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, which he described as having a "moderately negative" effect on procedure volumes. The second is a structural shift: GLP-1 weight-loss drugs are increasingly replacing bariatric surgery, reducing the number of those procedures.
The management's cautious tone on U.S. procedure growth — the direct consequence of these headwinds — was the immediate trigger for the post-earnings selloff that erased more than 10 percent in after-hours trading. But the deeper issue is valuation. Intuitive Surgical now trades at 33 times expected earnings, a far cry from the 70-plus multiples it commanded in earlier years. That multiple compression has been a primary driver of the share price decline, independent of any deterioration in the underlying business.
Analyst Targets Slashed, Conviction Holds
Several investment banks cut their price targets sharply after the quarterly numbers, though most maintained positive ratings. JPMorgan lowered its target to $450 from $550, Wells Fargo to $487 from $654, Stifel to $550 from $670, Bernstein to $685 from $750, and RBC Capital to $575 from $600. William Blair kept its "Outperform" rating, attributing the selloff to inflated investor expectations rather than a weakening long-term outlook, and pointed to the company's industry-leading earnings growth profile.

International Markets Pick Up the Slack
While the U.S. business cools, international operations are accelerating. Da Vinci procedures outside the United States rose 20 percent in the quarter, with notable gains in Europe and Asia. That geographic diversification provides a buffer against domestic headwinds and suggests the adoption curve for robotic surgery remains intact globally.
The 14-day relative strength index sits at 34.8, territory that typically signals an oversold condition. The annualized 30-day volatility of 54.17 percent underscores just how jittery the market has become. Some analysts already argue the stock is undervalued given the innovation pipeline and the fortress-like balance sheet. But the market has not yet decided how much credit to extend to the growth story while the valuation correction is still underway. The Da Vinci 5 super-cycle may be delivering faster than expected, but it is colliding with a reassessment of what that growth is worth.
