Intuitive Surgical’s Growth Story Collides With a Brutal Valuation Reset

Robotic surgery leader Intuitive Surgical posts strong Q2 earnings but faces stock sell-off due to US procedure slowdown, ACA subsidy expiry, and GLP-1 drug impact.

Intuitive Surgical Stock Plunges 36% Despite Q2 Earnings Beat and Revenue Growth

The math is getting uncomfortable for Intuitive Surgical investors. The robotic surgery pioneer posted a second-quarter revenue beat, earnings that topped analyst estimates, and a 24% jump in net income — yet its stock has been punished so severely that it recently scraped a 52-week low of €299.60, a level not seen since early 2024. The disconnect between operational momentum and market reception has rarely been this stark.

On July 22, the company reported revenue of $2.89 billion, comfortably ahead of the $2.82 billion consensus, while adjusted earnings per share of $2.80 also cleared the $2.51 analyst forecast. GAAP net income rose to $818 million. But the headline numbers masked a deceleration that spooked investors: global procedure growth came in at 15%, but in the US — the company’s largest market — that pace slowed to 12% from 14% in the first quarter. For a stock that has historically commanded a premium multiple on the promise of sustained expansion, even a modest slowdown in the domestic market was enough to trigger a sharp reassessment.

The sell-off was immediate and severe. Shares plunged as much as 13% in after-hours trading, and the pain has persisted. The stock now trades at roughly €310, representing a year-to-date decline of 36.59% and a 12-month drop of 28.80%. The 14-day relative strength index sits at 34.8, firmly in oversold territory, while annualized 30-day volatility of 54.17% underscores just how jittery the market has become.

Two Headwinds That Won’t Let Up

Management pointed to two specific factors weighing on procedure volumes. CFO Jamie Samath noted that the expiration of enhanced health insurance subsidies under the Affordable Care Act had a “moderately negative” impact on case numbers. Separately, the rising popularity of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs is eating into demand for bariatric surgery, a meaningful procedure category for Intuitive’s installed base. Neither development threatens the company’s long-term thesis, but both are acting as near-term drags.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Intuitive Surgical?

The company placed 468 new da Vinci systems during the quarter, including 246 of the next-generation da Vinci 5 model. The installed base now stands at 11,710 units globally, while the Ion lung biopsy system has reached 1,096 installations, up 21% year over year. Notably, 54% of new placements were leased rather than sold — a shift that provides recurring revenue but depresses upfront recognition. Management reaffirmed its full-year guidance for global procedure growth of 13.5% to 15.5% and announced plans to extend EndoWrist instrument usage cycles starting in the first half of 2027 to lower per-procedure costs.

The Valuation Reckoning

Perhaps the most powerful force driving the stock lower has nothing to do with operations. Intuitive Surgical now trades at roughly 33 times forward earnings — a steep discount to the 70x multiples it commanded in prior years. This multiple compression has been a primary engine of the stock’s decline, even as the underlying business continues to grow at double-digit rates. The market is effectively repricing the equity to reflect a more mature growth trajectory, and the process has been brutal.

Analysts responded to the quarter by slashing price targets while largely maintaining positive ratings. JPMorgan cut its target from $550 to $450, Wells Fargo from $654 to $487, Stifel from $670 to $550, Bernstein from $750 to $685, and RBC Capital from $600 to $575. The consensus remains a “Moderate Buy” with an average target of $523.46. William Blair characterized the post-earnings sell-off as a reaction to inflated expectations rather than a deterioration in the long-term outlook, keeping its “Outperform” rating and pointing to the company’s industry-leading earnings growth profile.

Insider Sales and Institutional Moves

Insider activity has added another layer of caution. Over the past 90 days, executives sold shares worth a combined $3.06 million. Director Amy Ladd disposed of 500 shares at $473.46 on April 28, EVP Gary Loeb sold 400 shares at $424.14 on June 10, and SVP Iman Jeddi unloaded 5,625 shares at $420.55 on June 1. The company also filed a shelf registration for $1.77 billion related to an employee stock purchase plan, which could lead to future dilution.

Yet some institutional investors have been buying the dip aggressively. Temasek Holdings increased its stake by 416.4% to 227,211 shares valued at $104.7 million. ABN Amro Investment Solutions boosted its position by 20.2% to 30,250 shares. Overall, institutional ownership stands at 83.64%.

Intuitive Surgical at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

A Market Still Divided

The stock’s technical picture remains fragile. After hitting a 2025 high of $516.50 in early January, the shares have been in near-constant retreat. The current price sits just 2.95% above the 52-week low, and the RSI of 33.9 signals that the selling may be overdone in the near term. But with the valuation reset still in motion and US procedure growth showing signs of fatigue, the market has yet to decide whether this is a buying opportunity or a value trap in the making.

On the positive side, the ecosystem around the da Vinci platform continues to expand. CONMED received FDA clearance the same day for an expanded indication of its AirSeal robotic solution for use with the da Vinci 5’s Hex cannula, a development that CEO Patrick J. Beyer explicitly credited to collaboration with Intuitive Surgical. The company holds $8.6 billion in cash and maintains roughly 80% market share in robotic soft-tissue surgery.

For now, Intuitive Surgical finds itself in an unusual position: delivering the kind of results that once would have sent its stock soaring, while watching its market value erode as investors demand a new price for growth.
