The institutional money flowing into IREN tells two sharply different stories. On one side, the world’s largest asset manager just made a staggering bet on the data-center operator. On the other, a Wall Street analyst has pointed to a nagging weakness that could undermine the entire AI infrastructure thesis.

BlackRock added more than 3.8 million IREN shares in the first quarter, increasing its position by 605 percent. That massive vote of confidence sits alongside fresh positions from funds such as Situational Awareness LP, which poured roughly $102 million into the stock, and TTRF Capital, which opened a $3.1 million first-time stake. In total, 288 institutional investors raised their holdings during the period, while only 161 cut back. The buying spree helped lift IREN shares 4.29 percent to €39.25 on Thursday, contributing to a weekly gain of more than 15 percent.

Yet not every heavyweight is piling in. Morgan Stanley sold 3.6 million shares over the same stretch, highlighting a deep split among professional investors in this highly volatile name. The stock still trades nearly 43 percent below its 52-week high, and the annualized 30-day volatility clocked in at almost 93 percent — a clear signal that the rally is riding on a hair trigger.

The divergence in institutional sentiment reflects an unresolved tension at the core of IREN’s strategy. The company began as a straightforward bitcoin miner. It has since repositioned itself as a large-scale infrastructure provider for artificial intelligence, securing power contracts and hardware capacity. But the sales engine has yet to catch up.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?

Analyst Gautam Chhugani of Bernstein delivered a pointed critique in a recent note. IREN, he said, is lagging neocloud rivals such as CoreWeave and Nebius in building out its enterprise customer business. While Chhugani maintained a buy rating and remained fundamentally optimistic, he flagged that the company generates less revenue per megawatt of contracted capacity than peers. The core problem, he argued, is not a lack of power or chips but a stalling sales machine that must convert existing capacity into dense, diversified enterprise revenue.

The timing of that warning added extra sting. The same week, reports emerged that Meta Platforms is exploring its own cloud business, potentially selling excess AI compute capacity directly. Meta’s planned capital expenditure of $125 billion to $145 billion in 2026 — nearly double the prior year — casts a long shadow over independent infrastructure specialists. If hyperscalers like Meta, Microsoft, or Google start marketing unused capacity themselves, the margins of firms that position themselves as power-rich alternatives could come under severe pressure. Shares of CoreWeave and Nebius also slid on the news.

IREN’s hybrid identity — part bitcoin miner, part AI cloud provider — is supposed to insulate it from such sector-specific shocks. The dual structure offers diversification, protecting against concentration risk in either business line. But it also opens the company to double scrutiny: investors compare it simultaneously with pure-play miners and pure-play AI infrastructure names. According to Bernstein, IREN has won the fight for power and contracts but is losing the battle for profitability to better-executing rivals.

IREN at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The company has tried to burnish its AI credentials through public associations. On July 8, IREN’s management appeared in a keynote on AI infrastructure alongside Nvidia, fueling speculation about future hardware allocations. A fresh analyst upgrade also helped support sentiment, with experts seeing renewed upside potential after the recent price slide.

None of this will resolve the fundamental tension overnight. IREN must now prove it can turn its secured capacity into high-margin, diversified enterprise revenue — while the broader sector must demonstrate that Meta’s cloud ambitions are a manageable competitive challenge rather than an existential threat. Until then, the stock remains a tug-of-war between bulls who see a moat in valuable power assets and bears who doubt the company’s ability to sell what it has built.
