IREN’s Ambition Is Written in Billions — Its Stock Price Tells a Different Story
Published on 07/28/2026 at 08:02 | Redaktion boerse-global.de
The numbers coming out of IREN are the kind that usually command attention. Multi-year cloud contracts worth roughly $2.8 billion, with Microsoft and Nvidia among the signatories. A raised target for annual recurring revenue from its AI cloud business to over $4 billion by the end of 2026, some 85% of which is already under contract. A planned ramp from just 3 megawatts of AI cloud capacity today to 480 megawatts by late 2026, with an eye on 1.2 gigawatts by 2027.
And yet the stock closed Monday at €31.96, down 2.22% on the day. Over the past week, it has shed 11.76%. The monthly decline stands at 20.43%. From its November record high of €68.61, the shares have fallen 53.41% — a more-than-halving that leaves the company’s market capitalization at €11.65 billion.
The disconnect between IREN’s stated ambitions and the market’s reception is stark. This is a classic “show me” story: management lays out aggressive targets, and investors demand proof before they buy in. The skepticism may only lift once IREN actually brings data center capacity online, rather than just promising it.
A Sector-Wide Cloud Hangs Over Execution
The hesitation isn’t unique to IREN. Industry estimates suggest that between 30% and 50% of the large-scale data center capacity planned for 2026 could be delayed by power-grid bottlenecks and construction setbacks. IREN is building out in an environment where systemic delays are almost baked into the outlook.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?
That has fueled broader unease across the AI infrastructure space. A particular concern: circular financing, where growth is underwritten by suppliers and customers financing each other rather than by genuine external demand. Nvidia’s potential financing guarantees for other data center operators have rattled sentiment across the sector. For IREN, the picture is mixed — 45% of its GPU costs are already covered by customer prepayments, but analysts still see a meaningful funding gap for the full build-out plan.
The company does have a war chest of roughly $7.6 billion, though $1.7 billion of that is earmarked for GPU financing with Microsoft and is not available for the rest of the business. That distinction matters when investors are already jittery about capital intensity.
Technical Signals Point Both Ways
The chart offers little comfort for bulls looking for a quick reversal. The stock trades 27.15% below its 50-day moving average and 24.46% below its 200-day average — a clearly bearish configuration. The 14-day relative strength index sits at 38.4, edging toward oversold territory, which could attract contrarian buyers.
But the annualized volatility of nearly 96% over the past month tells the real story: this is a stock that swings violently in both directions. Buying IREN is not a quiet position.
The longer-term lens adds nuance. Over the past twelve months, the shares are still up more than 123%. Year-to-date, however, they are slightly in the red. Two timeframes, two entirely different narratives — depending on whether one focuses on the recent pullback or the multi-year transformation.
IREN at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
A Mining Foundation Beneath the Cloud Ambitions
What sets IREN apart from many pure-play AI startups is its existing operational base. The company runs a profitable Bitcoin mining business powered by renewable energy, with a power portfolio of over 4.5 gigawatts across North America. That physical infrastructure gives it a tangible foundation to build on — and a revenue stream that many competitors in the AI cloud space lack.
Insider ownership of roughly 13.57% suggests management has skin in the game. But the aggressive pace of investment in AI infrastructure will likely require the kind of capital raises that make investors nervous. The company’s transition from miner to vertically integrated AI cloud provider is capital-intensive by design, and the market is still weighing whether the payoff will justify the spending.
For now, IREN remains a high-conviction bet on the physical layer of the AI revolution — one where the gap between promise and proof will determine whether the stock recovers or continues to drift. The wide distance from the record high may look like a bargain, but that will only prove true if IREN hits its self-imposed capacity targets by the end of the year.
