Japanese conglomerate Itochu is accelerating its evolution from a traditional trading house into a developer of green infrastructure. This strategic shift is underscored by disciplined capital management and a growing emphasis on securing critical raw materials through advanced recycling initiatives.

Capital Allocation and Shareholder Returns

The company recently demonstrated its commitment to shareholder value through two key actions. First, a final dividend of 22 JPY per share will be paid on June 23 to shareholders registered as of March 31. The stock will trade ex-dividend starting Monday, March 30, 2026.

Concurrently, Itochu finalized a substantial share repurchase program on March 24. The initiative involved acquiring approximately 9.5 million of its own shares for a total of 20 billion JPY. This move fully utilized the financial framework established in February and is designed to support earnings per share (EPS) growth for the current fiscal year.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Itochu?

Building a Circular Economy Focus

Behind these financial measures lies a deeper, long-term strategic realignment. Itochu is significantly expanding its activities in "urban mining"—the process of reclaiming valuable materials from discarded electronics. In a key partnership, the firm has established a joint venture with US-based Electronic Recyclers International (ERI), named ERI Japan.

Scheduled to commence operations in April 2026, the venture will focus on recycling IT equipment to recover rare earth elements such as neodymium and dysprosium. These metals are vital components in manufacturing electric vehicle motors and wind turbines. By developing this capability, Itochu and other Japanese trading companies aim to create a more resilient domestic supply chain for critical resources, reducing dependence on volatile global markets and price fluctuations.

Renewable Energy Expansion in Northern Japan

The push into sustainable business segments is also evident in Itochu's renewable energy portfolio. Since early March, the Mutsu Ogawara Wind Farm in Aomori Prefecture has been in commercial operation. Itochu holds a significant stake in the joint venture managing this project.

The facility comprises 15 turbines with a total maximum output of 64.5 MW. It is projected to generate enough electricity to power roughly 46,000 households annually while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 81,000 tons. This investment in sustainable infrastructure forms part of a broader corporate strategy to build a diversified portfolio that acts as a buffer against geopolitical uncertainty and resource price volatility, cementing its ongoing transformation.
