The semiconductor equipment maker Lam Research has been caught in a brutal tug-of-war. After a stunning rally that saw its shares more than double over the past year, the stock crashed over 10% on Thursday to close at $351.41. The sell-off had no company-specific trigger; instead, a wave of anxiety swept through the entire chip sector, fueled by mounting fears that the artificial-intelligence spending spree may be approaching a peak.

Investors are increasingly questioning whether the billions poured into AI infrastructure will generate commensurate returns. Reports that Meta Platforms is exploring a cloud business to monetise its surplus AI capacity rattled markets, as it suggested potential overcapacity. Meanwhile, OpenAI disclosed significant efficiency gains in its models, which could reduce the need for new hardware. These developments, combined with weaker-than-expected US private-sector jobs data, sparked a flight from richly valued growth stocks. Lam Research had already gained nearly 90% since the start of the year, inviting heavy profit-taking.

The selling pressure is being amplified by a technical warning from Bank of America. Its "Bubble Risk Indicator" for semiconductor stocks has hit 0.91, a level that historically precedes corrections. Morningstar analysts are now cautioning that AI-related equities could suffer a drawdown of as much as 30%, citing the risk of massive overcapacity among producers.

Institutional investors are sending mixed signals. Kepler Cheuvreux Suisse SA slashed its Lam Research stake by more than 14% in the first quarter. Yet other players are piling in: Private Wealth Partners LLC boosted its position by a staggering 81%. The divergence underscores the uncertainty surrounding the sector's trajectory.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Lam Research?

A stark contrast between management and the market

Just a month ago, Lam Research's CFO described the current demand environment as the strongest he had ever witnessed, adding that the only bottleneck was a shortage of cleanroom capacity. Those comments followed a robust fiscal third quarter ended March, in which revenue jumped 24% to nearly $5.8 billion. For the current quarter, management guided earnings per share in a range of $1.50 to $1.80. The full fourth-quarter results are due at the end of July.

Yet the market is now fixated on downside risks. One significant overhang is the company's heavy exposure to China, which accounts for roughly one-third of its sales. Tightening US export controls continue to weigh on sentiment among institutional investors.

Key catalysts lie ahead. Next week, two of Lam Research's major customers will provide fresh data: Samsung Electronics is set to release preliminary second-quarter figures, with analysts looking for signs of sustained memory-chip demand, and SK Hynix is pursuing a Nasdaq-listed ADR, whose performance is viewed as a bellwether for the equipment market. Additionally, the Federal Reserve will publish its latest meeting minutes on July 9, 2026, offering clues on interest-rate policy that directly affects high-multiple tech stocks.

Dividends offer modest comfort

Amid the turbulence, Lam Research continues to return cash to shareholders. The company will pay its quarterly dividend of $0.26 per share on July 8, 2026, marking a decade of consecutive increases. Even so, the yield stands at just 0.30%, with the payout consuming roughly one-fifth of earnings.

Lam Research at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Analysts remain broadly constructive. The consensus rating among 28 experts is "Moderate Buy", with an average price target of $345.39 — actually below the current share price. The stock is now trading about 20% below its 52-week high, but on a 12-month basis it still shows a gain of 154%.

That valuation must now be validated by operating performance. The upcoming earnings release will be a critical test, pitting management's confident outlook against the market's growing scepticism about the durability of AI-driven capital expenditure.
