Lam Research shares fell 9.65% from a 52-week peak, but strong Q1 results, AI-driven demand, and raised analyst targets suggest the pullback is technical.

Lam Research experienced a dramatic reversal of fortune this week, touching a new 52-week peak of $409.75 on Monday only to surrender nearly all those gains in a single session. The stock closed Tuesday at $370.00, a brutal 9.65% single-day decline that wiped out months of accumulated upside for latecomers.

The correction, however, should be viewed through the lens of an extraordinary run. Even after the drop, Lam Research shares have gained around 100% since the start of the year and more than 300% over the past twelve months. Profit-taking was widely expected after such a meteoric ascent, and a confluence of external headwinds — a sharp fall in South Korea's KOSPI index, climbing US bond yields, and renewed geopolitical unease — provided ample cover for sellers.

None of this diminishes the underlying strength of the business. For the quarter ended March 2026, Lam reported record revenue of $5.84 billion, up 24% from the prior year, while adjusted earnings per share of $1.47 exceeded consensus estimates by a clear margin. Its services division, CSBG, crossed the $2 billion quarterly mark for the first time. The company has guided for revenue of approximately $6.6 billion in the current June quarter, with gross margins holding steady at 50.5% — a clear sign that profitability remains intact.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Lam Research?

Analysts have responded to the robust outlook by raising their price targets. Wells Fargo and Citi now see the stock reaching $450, while Oppenheimer set a target of $400. Cantor Fitzgerald went a step further, boosting its target to $425 and citing "unprecedented demand visibility" extending into 2028. The firm's management recently signaled that the market for wafer-fab equipment — a key gauge of industry health — is now expected to reach $140 billion this year, a significant upward revision with further growth potential in 2027.

The engine behind this optimism is artificial intelligence. Lam Research is a critical supplier of etching and deposition tools used in advanced packaging and high-bandwidth memory, both essential for AI chips and data-center infrastructure. The company expects its advanced-packaging revenues to grow more than 50% in 2026, and analysts believe the current upcycle has years to run as chip architectures become ever more complex.

The timing of Tuesday's sell-off coincided with the Nasdaq-100's annual rebalancing, a mechanical event that reshuffled index constituents and triggered forced repositioning by passive funds. While Lam Research was not among the stocks removed — its strong performance this year secured its place — the broader rotation across the index added to the volatility gripping semiconductor names.

Ultimately, the pullback appears largely technical in nature. Lam Research's fundamentals remain solid, its AI-driven growth narrative is intact, and analyst forecasts point to further upside. The correction may test the patience of short-term traders, but for those focused on the multi-year story, the dip offers a potentially attractive entry point.
