LPKF Laser’s Whiplash Week: Index Inclusion Fever Gives Way to a 25% Profit-Taking Slump

The SDAX promotion that LPKF Laser & Electronics had long awaited turned into a textbook case of “buy the rumour, sell the fact.” After touching a fresh 52-week high of €30.20 on the very day of its index entry, the stock suffered a brutal reversal, shedding nearly a quarter of its value before the week was out.
By Friday’s close, the shares stood at €21.60 — a weekly loss of 24.74%. That slide also pushed the price below the widely watched 50-day moving average of €21.89, a technical level that had offered support during the stock’s spectacular 259% year-to-date rally. The annualised volatility of more than 135% underscores just how jittery the market has become around this mid-cap laser specialist.
No Bad News — Just Rebalancing
The sell-off was not triggered by any operational disaster. Management released no negative announcements during the week. Instead, the rout reflects a classic pattern: index-tracking funds accumulate the stock ahead of its SDAX inclusion on 21 June, and once the transition was complete, momentum traders and early investors rushed to cash in gains. Such profit-taking after an index debut is common, though the scale of the correction here — a drop of more than 27% from the peak — caught many short-term holders off guard.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying LPKF Laser?
Chart analysts now see the €21.60 area as a make-or-break level. Should selling pressure persist, the next technical floor lies at the 100-day moving average, currently at €14.61.
LIDE Orders Hold the Key
The massive rally that preceded this week’s carnage was built on expectations for LPKF’s LIDE technology, a laser-based process aimed at semiconductor production. While numerous customers are evaluating the equipment, orders for series machines remain elusive. The first-quarter numbers offered a mixed picture: revenue slumped to €17.1 million, dragged down by a weak solar business, but order intake climbed to €24.1 million, giving a healthy book-to-bill ratio of 1.4.
That strong order inflow, combined with the group’s ongoing cost-cutting programme, has kept the bull case alive. Yet the stock’s elevated valuation now depends entirely on converting those order-book figures into hard, recurring revenue from LIDE systems. Any delay in closing those deals could trigger a further retreat.
What to Watch on 23 July
All eyes are now on the half-year report scheduled for 23 July. That is when the board will have to present concrete figures for order intake in the semiconductor segment, and provide an update on the transformation programme. If management can show that the LIDE pipeline is turning into signed contracts — and that margins are improving — the latest sell-off may prove to be little more than a violent shakeout. But if the earnings disappoint, the 100-day line could come into play far sooner than the bulls would like.
