A string of major energy and petrochemical companies have been recognised for outstanding health, safety, and environmental (HSE) performance, with a wave of international awards and certifications announced this week. The accolades underscore the growing emphasis on safety innovation, digital transformation, and long-term incident-free operations across the sector — offering UK employers a benchmark for what best practice looks like in high-risk industries.

ONGC and Karun Petrochemical Lead Regional Safety Honours

On 7 July 2026, India's ONGC secured the Platinum award at the Global Safety Innovation Awards 2026. The recognition comes alongside further regional HSE accolades in the Middle East, where Karun Petrochemical Company was named the top HSE petrochemical entity in its region during a National Safety and Firefighting Day ceremony organised by the Petrochemical Special Economic Zone.

In India, Coromandel International's Kakinada facility — one of the country's largest phosphatic fertiliser plants — earned the British Safety Council Sword of Honour for 2025. The award follows the plant achieving a five-star certification three times between 2024 and 2025.

These global accolades highlight what robust safety management can achieve. But many UK employers still face gaps in documenting workplace risks properly — a missing risk assessment can leave a business exposed during inspections or after an incident. The free Risk Assessment Toolkit provides 41 ready-to-use templates and checklists to help you document hazards and comply with UK regulations. Download the free Risk Assessment Toolkit

Digital Innovation Drives Safety Excellence in Indonesia

On 6 July 2026, PT Pertamina Patra Niaga RU V Balikpapan took part in the judging session for the Indonesia Safety Excellence Award (ISEA) 2026, showcasing how digital transformation is being embedded into safety protocols.

Key innovations presented included the SUPREME system for safety management, the use of artificial intelligence for security monitoring, and the Safety Leadership Program 4.0. According to company data, implementation of the SMK3 — the Workplace Health and Safety Management System — drove an audit score improvement from 90.96% in 2021 to 93.37% in 2025. The refinery also reported a high HSSE survey score of 4.40, categorised as "very good".

Safe Work Hour Milestones in Global Operations

Several companies reported significant safety milestones for lost-time injury (LTI) free operations. In Dubai, facility management firm Concordia received the RoSPA Gold Award for Health and Safety Performance and the Fleet Safety Gold Award for 2026. The company recorded more than 7.6 million LTI-free man-hours during 2025, and over a 24-month period has accumulated more than 14.3 million safe hours across its 40 sites and 2,000 employees.

In Indonesia, PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional Refinery Unit III Plaju reached a cumulative total of 138,368,282 safe work hours between December 2009 and December 2024. In 2024 alone, the refinery unit recorded more than 9 million safe work hours with a zero total recordable incident rate (TRIR). The facility's commitment to safety was further reinforced during a Mindset & Culture Day held in late 2025, which emphasised the HSSE Golden Rules of compliance, intervention, and care.

Achieving zero-incident operations demands comprehensive safety documentation covering everything from risk assessments to fire safety. Over 37,000 UK companies already use the free Health & Safety Toolkit to stay compliant with regulations like the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and COSHH. Braskem Texas Facilities Recognised for 2025 Performance

Earlier this summer, on 4 June 2026, Braskem received six awards from the Texas Chemistry Council during a ceremony in Galveston, recognising the 2025 safety performance at three Texas facilities.

The Seadrift site was honoured with the Zero Incident Award and the Dr. Sam Mannan Award. The Oyster Creek facility received three distinctions: the Caring for Texas Award, the Zero Incident Award, and the Dr. Sam Mannan Award.
