Metaplanet is closing in on its 52-week low of €1.20, yet the Japanese firm is betting on two very different levers to change the narrative. On Tuesday the stock shed 5.3% to settle at €1.25, leaving it just 4% above that floor. Year to date, the shares have cratered roughly 44%, a sell-off that recently triggered removal from the S&P Japan Mid Cap 100 index. The company now finds itself fighting for investor loyalty with a Bitcoin giveaway and a ¥2.1 billion securities acquisition.

The loyalty programme, developed in partnership with the domestic crypto exchange Coincheck, rewards long-term holders. Any shareholder who keeps at least 100 Metaplanet shares until the end of June 2026 and holds a Coincheck account will be entered into a draw. Fifty winners will each receive Bitcoin worth ¥100,000. The scheme is plainly an attempt to stem the exodus of retail investors after the index ejection and a punishing 87% decline from last June’s all-time high of €10.05.

On the strategic front, Metaplanet is pushing ahead with its purchase of Siiibo Securities for roughly ¥2.1 billion. The regulated broker is expected to form the foundation of “Metaplanet Securities,” granting the group a Type 1 financial instruments business licence. With that authorisation, Metaplanet can issue bonds to fund additional Bitcoin purchases without diluting equity — a structure that mirrors Michael Saylor’s playbook at Strategy. The company currently sits on a war chest of 40,177 Bitcoin.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Metaplanet?

Notably, the Bitcoin-first mantra has gone quiet on the buying side. Metaplanet has not added a single coin in nine weeks, a pause that contrasts sharply with peers. Strategy recently snapped up 520 Bitcoin for $35 million, while Strive Inc also made heavy purchases in June. The Japanese firm is instead devoting its focus to integrating Siiibo, hoping that a regulated securities arm will unlock new revenue streams tied to digital assets and restore confidence.

Chart watchers see little relief in the near term. The relative strength index stands at 35.6, flirting with oversold territory but still pointing south. The 200-day moving average at €2.40 is nearly double the current price, and a first hurdle sits at the 50-day line of €1.59. Macro catalysts may eventually break the deadlock. Japan’s Government Pension Investment Fund is set to allocate 1% of its portfolio to crypto from 2026, and the government is overhauling digital-asset regulations, paving the way for spot Bitcoin ETFs that could funnel fresh institutional money into the space. For now, though, the market is waiting for a single concrete milestone: the closing of the Siiibo deal.
