Micron Technology is demonstrating its critical position in building artificial intelligence infrastructure through a combination of technological advancement and unprecedented market demand. The memory chip specialist has revealed that its entire 2026 production capacity for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) is already sold out, with both pricing and volume locked in by contracts. As the company approaches its quarterly earnings report on March 18th, indicators suggest its pricing power is strengthening further.

Supply Constraints and Long-Term Contracts Define the Market

A significant shift is underway in how memory chips are sold. Instead of negotiating prices quarterly, customers are now entering supply agreements spanning three to five years. This change provides Micron with substantially greater planning certainty and reduces the typical cyclicality of the semiconductor business. With its 2026 capacity fully booked and a new Idaho fab scheduled to commence production in mid-2027, the company appears well-positioned for the medium term.

Analysts confirm this tight supply outlook. UBS has raised its price target for Micron shares—which closed at 342.15 euros on Thursday—to $475. Market experts anticipate that the shortage of DRAM memory chips could persist into 2027 or even 2028. The scarcity stems from inherent supply inertia: limited fabrication space and lengthy lead times for production equipment prevent manufacturers from ramping up capacity quickly enough to meet exploding demand.

A Technical Leap for AI Data Centers

On March 3rd, Micron began shipping samples of the world’s first 256GB SOCAMM2 LPDRAM module. Behind this technical designation lies a solution targeting two major challenges in modern AI data centers: memory capacity and power consumption.

The new module delivers one-third more capacity than previous leading models while consuming notably less power and requiring less physical space. For compute-intensive applications like large language models (LLMs), this enables more efficient processing. Micron is collaborating closely with Nvidia to ensure the hardware is optimally tuned for the needs of advanced AI infrastructure.

Record Expectations and a $100 Billion Market Forecast

Investor attention is now fixed on the upcoming March 18th earnings release. For the second quarter of its fiscal 2026, record results are anticipated, with analyst consensus estimating revenue of approximately $18.85 billion.

This confidence is grounded in concrete facts. Micron has already sold its complete HBM production for calendar year 2026. This includes the next-generation HBM4, whose production ramp-up is set for the second quarter. The market for these high-performance memory products is expanding rapidly; Micron forecasts the total addressable market will reach about $100 billion by 2028—a milestone expected two years earlier than initial projections.
