Micron Technology is pouring more than $250 billion into domestic chip capacity over the next decade, yet its shares just suffered one of the steepest weekly drops of the year. That tension — between an aggressive long-term strategy and a short-term stock that has more than doubled in 12 months — captures the vertiginous dynamics of the AI memory market.

The pullback is sharp but not alarming in context. After touching a 52-week high of €1,103.80 on June 25, the stock closed Friday at €857.70, down 1.10% on the day and 5.95% for the week. That still leaves it 846% above its 52-week low of €90.64 from last August, with a year-to-date gain of 218.85% and a trailing twelve-month advance of 714.84%. The 30-day annualized volatility of 109.57% — more than double that of many established tech names — underscores that this equity trades less like a conventional semiconductor stock and more like a leveraged bet on AI infrastructure.

The scale of the investment plan explains why the market is willing to look through the noise. Micron's centerpiece project is in Clay, New York, where the first concrete pour for a vertical fab occurred more than a quarter ahead of schedule. The goal is to bring 40% of the company's global DRAM production to US soil by 2035, a massive shift for a sector long dominated by Asian manufacturing hubs.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron?

But building factories is only half the equation. Micron is also securing the upstream supply chain with a $3 billion investment package, including a $500 million financing deal for GlobalWafers. The two companies signed a ten-year agreement for raw 300-millimeter silicon wafers produced at a new plant in Sherman, Texas. That long-term pact locks in critical input capacity and reduces reliance on foreign suppliers — a move that analysts say will prove decisive if the memory shortage extends beyond 2027 as expected.

Demand visibility is also improving on the customer side. In the first week of July, Micron signed multiyear supply agreements with Ford and General Motors to guarantee high-performance memory for next-generation vehicle platforms. Such strategic customer pacts are part of a broader effort to break the memory industry's traditional boom-bust cycle by locking in demand years in advance.

The fundamental backdrop supports the thesis. UBS reported that global memory chip revenue hit a record $74.6 billion in July, up 31.7% month-on-month, driven by surging AI demand and negotiations over long-term contracts. Micron's high-bandwidth memory capacity is already sold out through 2027, according to the company, reinforcing management's view that the current upturn is structural rather than cyclical.

Against that landscape, the analyst consensus target of €1,300.80 implies a 51.7% upside from Friday's close. The 50-day moving average of €803.32 and the 200-day average of €409.18 both sit well below the current price, suggesting the long-term trend remains intact even as the stock digests a 22.3% peak-to-trough correction. With a market cap of €926.53 billion, Micron now ranks among the heaviest hitters in the chip industry — and the billions it is committing to US soil suggest it intends to stay there.
