Micron’s Expansion Goes Physical as the Stock Prices in a New Era of Memory Scarcity

Micron appoints NVIDIA/Meta veteran, breaks ground on NY fab, and locks HBM supply for 2026, pushing stock near all-time high ahead of earnings.

Micron Technology has installed a straight pipeline to the AI infrastructure playbook—right on its board of directors. Dr. Alexis Black Björlin, former head of NVIDIA’s DGX Cloud and a vice president of infrastructure at Meta, joined the board on June 9. This is not a ceremonial appointment. It brings system-level expertise from two of the biggest consumers of memory bandwidth, underscoring Micron’s transformation from a component vendor to an architect of the AI stack.

That tectonic shift is also taking concrete form 400 miles north of Wall Street. On June 10, Micron awarded construction giant Bechtel the contract for the first phase of its new memory chip complex in Clay, New York. The move turns the theoretical conversation about AI-driven memory shortages into a physical build-out. Capital spending on new capacity is no longer a vague promise—it is a line item with a contractor.

The market is already pricing in that scarcity. Shares surged 9.44% to €928.80 on the day, leaving the stock less than 1% below its all-time high of €938. Earlier in the session, a geopolitical tailwind—a US-Iran peace agreement that sparked a sector-wide relief rally—had already pushed the stock up roughly 8% to €916. By the close, the session’s combined catalysts had lifted Micron’s market capitalisation to nearly €956 billion.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron?

What justifies that price tag is the exhaustion of supply before it even arrives. Micron’s entire HBM production capacity for calendar 2026 is already spoken for, locked in by long-term contracts. That eliminates the demand uncertainty that has historically plagued memory stocks. The company is already shipping HBM4 modules in volume, designed for NVIDIA’s Vera-Rubin platform, and on Computex 2026 it unveiled a 256-GB SOCAMM2 module for edge AI and next-generation PCs.

Yet the stock is trading nearly 30% above the average analyst price target of around €714 (converted from roughly $828). The consensus has not caught up with the rerating. With a relative strength index of 66.8, the stock is warm but not overbought, while its 200-day moving average sits 178% below the current price—a gap that leaves zero margin for error.

That margin will be tested on June 24, when Micron reports fiscal third-quarter earnings. The report is no longer a routine quarterly update; it is a stress test for the entire AI-memory thesis. The numbers must confirm that demand, supply, and execution are in perfect alignment. The company’s second-quarter filing already showed strong server demand, but insufficient DRAM and NAND supply constrained growth. Management expects NAND undersupply to persist.

For decades, memory was a textbook commodity cycle. Micron is now betting that the AI build-out has overwritten that script. With a board member versed in NVIDIA’s cloud operations, a construction crew breaking ground in upstate New York, and a product portfolio sold out a year in advance, the company is asking investors to pay for control of a bottleneck rather than for another good quarter. At €928.80, the question is not whether the story is compelling—it’s whether the price already tells the entire story.
