Microsoft shares surged this week, buoyed by a clear two-part strategy: aggressively expanding its AI infrastructure while simultaneously extracting higher value from its hardware and software products. The stock climbed nearly 4% in Frankfurt, decisively breaking above its 50-day moving average of 336.42 euros to close at 347.25 euros.

A significant driver of this optimism is the company's massive capital expenditure in data centers. In a move to triple its capacity in the region, Microsoft has acquired approximately 1,300 hectares of land in Cheyenne, Wyoming. This expansion is complemented by a colossal 6.2 billion dollar investment in a new data center facility in Narvik, Norway, located north of the Arctic Circle. The Norwegian site is slated to house 30,000 Nvidia "Vera Rubin" chips, hardware originally earmarked for OpenAI projects.

This infrastructure push directly fuels the company's Intelligent Cloud segment, where the Azure platform reported a 39% year-over-year revenue jump in the second fiscal quarter of 2026, surpassing 50 billion dollars. Analysts at KeyBanc, maintaining a $600 price target, point to intense customer investment intentions within the Azure ecosystem.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Microsoft?

On the consumer and enterprise front, Microsoft is pushing price points and functionality higher. The company has raised the starting price for its new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop to $1,499—a $500 increase from their 2024 launch. Top-tier Surface models now reach up to $3,649, a hike attributed to global component shortages driven by insatiable AI data center demand for memory chips.

Simultaneously, Microsoft is refining its Copilot AI for professional users. New features in Word, currently in beta for Windows, now include precise change tracking, a critical function for legal and financial documents that was previously lacking. This enhancement targets the lucrative enterprise market, where Microsoft 365 Copilot already boasts over 15 million paying users as of early 2026.

The week also saw necessary defensive moves. Microsoft addressed security concerns by patching 167 vulnerabilities in a recent update, including a critical zero-day flaw in its SharePoint server that was being actively exploited.

Despite the recent rally, the stock remains down 14.61% year-to-date. All eyes are now on the upcoming earnings report scheduled for April 29, 2026, which will detail the company's third fiscal quarter performance. Investors will scrutinize whether the growth in the cloud division can justify the relentless pace of these multi-billion dollar investments.
