Nebius Group: Hedge Fund's $64M Bet vs Insider Sales & Meta Threat

It is a tale of two signals. In one corner, a newly launched hedge fund has placed almost 59 percent of its entire equity portfolio on Nebius Group — a $64 million bet that the AI infrastructure provider will emerge stronger from its current turbulence. In the other, the company’s own top brass has been quietly trimming their stakes, with insider sales totaling roughly $23 million over recent days. The stock’s 15 percent weekly slide to around €167 tells the rest of the story.

The divergence between institutional conviction and managerial profit-taking captures the uncertainty swirling around the Amsterdam-based "neocloud" operator. Nebius has been one of the year’s standout performers, still up nearly 124 percent since January and 314 percent over twelve months. Yet the shares have tumbled more than 34 percent from the June 22 record of €261, as a new competitive threat from the company’s biggest customer upends the bull case.

Meta’s cloud pivot casts a shadow over a $12 billion contract

The trigger came on July 1, when reports emerged that Meta Platforms is preparing to launch "Meta Compute," an internal cloud unit that would sell spare AI compute capacity to third parties. The move would turn the social media giant — which holds a $12 billion contract with Nebius due to begin in 2027, plus an option for another $15 billion — into a direct rival overnight.

The implications are stark. Meta is believed to be operating some 2.5 million H100-equivalent graphics processing units by the end of 2025, giving it enormous scope to monetise idle capacity. For Nebius, which trades at a price-to-sales multiple of roughly 65 times trailing revenue, the margins for error are vanishingly thin. The strategic rationale for an external partner like Nebius diminishes materially if Meta can satisfy third-party demand from its own clusters.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nebius?

Boutique research house SemiAnalysis has pushed back against the panic, arguing that Meta is primarily building new capacity through external partners. In that view, the tech giant remains a massive growth engine for neocloud providers such as Nebius and CoreWeave, rather than a cannibalising rival.

Nebius doubles down on capex as legal headaches mount

Nebius is not waiting to find out. The company has raised its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to between $20 billion and $25 billion, up from an earlier range of $16 billion to $20 billion. The spending is earmarked for large-scale projects across Europe and the United States, including a $10 billion investment in Finland and a 240-megawatt facility in France.

But physical expansion is proving stickier than renting virtual chips. In Alabama, Nebius is locked in a court battle over its Birmingham data centre project, with local residents suing over noise and zoning concerns. A judicial stay on construction remains a live risk, adding a layer of operational uncertainty to the macro narrative.

Insider sales — and one outsized bet

The insider selling that rattled retail investors this week is not as ominous as it first appears. Chief executive Arkadiy Volozh unloaded roughly 47,000 shares in early July, but the transaction was automated, executed purely to cover tax obligations stemming from employee stock allocations. He retains more than 820,000 shares. Technology chief Danila Shtan and infrastructure head Andrey Korolenko also reduced their holdings, together selling about $12 million worth of equity.

The message from TTRF Capital argues the opposite thesis. The hedge fund’s debut investment is a concentrated wager that Nebius’s current discount is temporary. The fund now holds Nebius as nearly 59 percent of its reported equity portfolio — a bet that the company’s core thesis of AI compute scarcity remains intact.

Nebius at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Technical signals and the path ahead

On the charts, the selling has brought the 14-day relative strength index to around 38, nearing oversold territory. The stock now trades 13.6 percent below its 50-day moving average of €193.62. A further slide would bring the 200-day line at €116.64 into view as the next major support level.

The broader picture is one of transition. Nebius enters the second half of the year with a market capitalisation of €47.86 billion, a war chest of up to $25 billion in annual spending, and a client that may soon double as its most formidable competitor. The coming quarters, when Meta Compute begins to take concrete shape, will determine whether the neocloud pioneer was a permanent pillar of the AI economy — or merely a bridge until the hyperscalers built their own capacity.
