Nebius Joins Nasdaq-100: Passive & Active Buying Fuel AI Infrastructure Play

Monday marks a new chapter for Nebius as the AI infrastructure provider officially joins the Nasdaq-100 index. The move triggers an automatic buying spree from passive funds tracking the benchmark, which collectively manage around $800 billion. For these vehicles, the purchase is compulsory — fundamentals need not apply. Yet alongside this passive wave, active institutional investors are also piling in, drawn by the company's commanding position in the physical infrastructure that underpins the AI boom.

The hedge fund Situational Awareness, founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, recently disclosed a 5.6% stake in Nebius. Aschenbrenner has been vocal about data centres and power grids being the true bottleneck in artificial intelligence, and Nebius fits squarely into that thesis. His fund already holds large positions in similar players such as Iren and CoreWeave. The combination of mandatory index buying and conviction-driven active bets has propelled the stock to extraordinary heights.

Nebius's financials give those bets plenty of ammunition. Revenue in the first quarter exploded 684% year on year to $399 million. The operating margin in the AI business nearly doubled to 45%. Yet the breakneck expansion rate means the adjusted net loss still came in at roughly $100 million — a temporary cost of building at scale. The balance sheet, however, is flush: Nebius ended the quarter with $9.3 billion in cash, having raised $6.3 billion through convertible bonds and a direct investment from Nvidia.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nebius?

That cash is already being deployed at speed. The company is targeting up to $25 billion in capital expenditure this year, with 16 data centres expected to be operational worldwide by year-end. In the UK alone, $2.3 billion is flowing into new AI capacity. Additional mega-projects are under way in Pennsylvania and Missouri. On the software side, Nebius recently acquired the start-up Eigen AI for $643 million, adding optimisation models to its platform and securing its first development outpost in Silicon Valley.

The investment thesis rests on a mountain of contracted demand. Nebius holds a guaranteed order book worth nearly $46 billion. Meta Platforms alone signed a multi-year deal potentially worth $27 billion, with initial deliveries slated to begin in early 2027. Microsoft has committed to a further multi-billion-dollar, five-year agreement. Nvidia, beyond its direct investment, is co-developing new AI factories with Nebius, which will be among the first providers to offer the Vera Rubin platform from the second half of the year.

Analysts have responded with enthusiasm. Bank of America raised its price target to $280, while the consensus view sits as high as $310, citing unrelenting demand for computing power. The stock has already surged about 220% year to date, closing Friday at €245.20. The 200-day moving line of €109.16 underscores just how far and fast the shares have travelled.

Still, the risks are hard to ignore. The stock's volatility stands at 109%, a figure that demands caution. Nebius must build enormous data centres, manage complex supply chains, and integrate three recent acquisitions simultaneously — all operational hazards that could trip up even the most ambitious growth plan. The true test arrives at the end of July, when management reports second-quarter results. Should the growth trajectory show any signs of softening, the shares could face a sharp reversal. For now, the perfect storm of index mechanics and institutional conviction continues to lift the stock, but the weather can change quickly in the AI infrastructure market.
