European Union member states reached a provisional agreement on June 24, 2026, to tighten exposure limits for six cancer-causing agents: cobalt, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 1,4-dioxane, isoprene, and welding fumes. The measure marks the sixth revision of the bloc’s directive on carcinogens and mutagens.

EU officials project the stricter thresholds will prevent roughly 1,700 lung cancer cases and a total of 19,000 work-related illnesses over the next 40 years. Formal approval from the European Parliament and the Council is still pending, but the political direction is clear.

With the EU tightening exposure limits and national regulations evolving, staying on top of health and safety compliance has never been more important. Yet many UK businesses still lack the fundamental documentation needed to prove compliance. A free Health & Safety Toolkit offers ready-to-use risk assessments, checklists and templates covering the key UK regulations. While the EU tightens chemical limits, Germany is modernising its own occupational safety framework. A revamped version of DGUV Regulation 2—the statutory rule governing company doctors and safety specialists—takes effect on July 1, 2026. Among the biggest changes: digital and telephone consultations are now explicitly permitted, expanding access for smaller firms. The pool of qualified prevention experts also broadens, with occupational psychologists expected to play a larger role.

The accompanying DGUV Rule 100-002 offers practical guidance, while company doctors will need to document ongoing training in their annual reports.

Separately, in June 2026, the workplace body updated its DGUV Rule 115-401 for office settings. The new guideline goes beyond chair-and-desk ergonomics to cover mental strain and indoor climate, integrating current references to technical rules for workstation screens.

On the machinery front, a new EU regulation—2023/1230—will replace the existing Machinery Directive on January 20, 2027. One notable impact: power-operated windows in workplaces will require annual inspections and additional fall-arrest safeguards.

Several product launches in late June 2026 also reflect the shifting landscape. BASF unveiled a high-performance plastic for self-contained breathing apparatus on June 25. The material features a reduced surface resistance for use in explosion-hazard zones and meets flammability class V-0. Meanwhile, a new exoskeleton designed for solar and photovoltaic installation work combines passive back relief during lifting and bending with compatibility for existing fall-protection systems.

While new equipment improves physical safety, many workplaces overlook the chemical hazards that require proper risk assessments. Under COSHH regulations, employers must identify and control exposure to dangerous substances. A free COSHH Risk Assessment Toolkit provides 43 customisable templates and checklists to help you fulfil these duties efficiently. In robotics, Kendrion introduced a safety architecture certified to ISO 10218:2025 that monitors position, speed, and torque across up to 20 safety zones. Construction machinery isn’t left out—on June 24, 2026, new standards for wheel loaders came into effect, incorporating radar systems, AI cameras, and fire-protection devices compliant with EN 1834-1:2000.

To manage the growing compliance burden, companies are increasingly turning to specialised maintenance-planning software that tracks ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 requirements, providing audit-ready documentation and reducing unplanned downtime.

The urgency of these measures was underscored at the 11th NPK Prevention Forum in Berlin on June 23, 2026. Experts noted that mental disorders were the third most common cause of sick leave in 2024, with digitalisation and technostress emerging as central challenges for Germany’s national prevention strategy.
