A European Union regulation on packaging and packaging waste (PPWR) is forcing logistics companies to digitise how they manage reusable pallets and containers. The law demands full traceability of multi-use packaging throughout the supply chain, a requirement that paper lists and spreadsheets can no longer satisfy.

Software provider COSYS Ident has responded with a platform that uses artificial intelligence and business-intelligence tools to reduce losses of pallets and containers. The beverage wholesale trade, which relies heavily on returnable crates and pallets, is a prime beneficiary. Mobile data-capture devices and dedicated management software are now replacing handwritten records, giving operators end-to-end visibility.

The regulatory push coincides with a wave of large-scale investment across the sector. Amazon unveiled a new generation of its Proteus robot in early June 2026. Powered by speech recognition, the machines plan their own routes and will start operating in Europe in the first half of 2027. They are part of a €10 billion spending programme targeting Amazon’s European logistics network. Alongside Proteus, Amazon introduced the Vulcan robot, which has a sense of touch, and the STARK container-management system. STARK will be installed at 15 European sites by 2027. A separate AI assistant, xPilot, developed with Microsoft, uses digital-twin technology to give retailers real-time insight into shelf stock.

In Bremerhaven, cold-storage specialist Lineage opened a new deep-freeze facility on 3 June 2026. The 19,000-square-metre site can hold 40,000 pallets and is designed primarily for handling seafood shipped from Asia to European markets.

Other logistics projects are advancing across Germany and neighbouring countries. The PORR Group completed the CCG North Logistics Centre in Austria in spring 2025, built on a 50,000-square-metre concrete slab. In Recklinghausen, a logistics hub featuring an Autostore system is under construction and expected to reach full operation by the end of 2027. The expanded container terminal at Berlin’s Westhafen is due to be finished later in 2026.

Shopware, the e-commerce platform provider, released version 6.7.10.0 in early June 2026. The update introduces an Agentic Commerce sales channel that supplies AI-generated product feeds to platforms such as ChatGPT. Existing Copilot functions receive basic agentic capabilities for administrative tasks in shop management.

But the rapid adoption of AI in e-commerce carries risks. Security researchers have warned that AI agents can extract sensitive configuration files. Tests involving large language models showed that unencrypted credentials stored in app files were enough to compromise user databases. No complex exploits were needed. The findings underscore the need for robust security protocols as logistics and retail operations become increasingly reliant on AI-driven tools.
