January 2027 may seem distant, but for anyone running industrial machinery in Europe, it arrives without a single day of wiggle room. The EU’s new Machine Regulation 2023/1230 will replace the long-standing Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC on 20 January that year — and there is no transition period. Companies that haven't aligned their risk assessments and technical documentation by then face immediate non-compliance.

Keeping your risk assessments up to date for the new Machine Regulation is a significant task — but you don’t have to start from scratch. A free Risk Assessment Toolkit provides 41 ready-to-use templates, checklists and training materials that cover everything from fire safety to lone working, helping you document hazards efficiently and stay compliant. The timing is deliberate. A freshly published revision of the electrical equipment standard DIN EN 60204-1 (VDE 0113-1) already tightens testing demands, effectively preparing the ground for the regulation’s stricter requirements. At the heart of the update lies a revamped inspection catalogue in Chapter 18, which sharpens rules on protective bonding and documentation. While the standard itself sets no fixed testing intervals, Germany’s Betriebssicherheitsverordnung (BetrSichV) — the ordinance on operational safety — together with the mandatory risk assessment, dictates the rhythm.

One area catching many operators off guard is power-operated windows. Under the new regime, annual checks according to workplace rules ASR A1.6 are no longer enough. Double suspension systems or fall-arrest devices will become compulsory. Industry representatives warn that these safety features are frequently overlooked in everyday practice, leaving a compliance gap that must be closed before 2027.

Older machines are not exempt either. Crucially, what counts is the current condition of the equipment, not its year of manufacture. Hazards arising from tampering, modifications or unexpected restart must be reassessed from scratch. This shifts the burden onto operators to verify that legacy installations meet modern safety standards even if they were compliant when first commissioned.

Parallel developments in robotics and IT security compound the challenge. The ISO 12100 standard for risk assessment is being revised — a draft has been circulating since 2024 — with a much stronger emphasis on digital attack vectors and cybersecurity. Meanwhile, the robotics standard ISO 10218:2025 is set to become the benchmark. Early adopters among manufacturers are already offering safety architectures capable of monitoring up to 20 separate safety zones, tracking positions, speeds and torque in real time. The goal is to reach safety integrity level SIL3/PL e while keeping cycle times short, enabling safer human-robot collaboration.

Beyond machine safety itself, a cascade of other regulatory changes will hit industry in the same timeframe. The “right to repair” takes effect by 31 July 2026, obliging manufacturers of 16 categories of electrical appliances to offer repairs at “reasonable prices” and stock spare parts for seven to ten years. A successful repair triggers an extension of the warranty period.

Invoicing is also being overhauled. From July 2026, the e-invoicing standard EN 16931-1:2026 will require structured payment terms and XML updates, paving the way for a mandatory e-invoice regime from 2027.

On top of machine safety, you may also need to demonstrate compliance with UK-specific regulations. A free Health & Safety Toolkit covers the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, COSHH, PUWER and more — with ready-to-use risk assessments and checklists that help you protect your workforce and avoid penalties. On the energy front, Germany’s cabinet has tightened the Energy Efficiency Act. Data centres get extended transition periods, but any company with an annual consumption of 23.6 gigawatt-hours or more must introduce a certified energy management system.

The message from Brussels and Berlin is unambiguous: documentation and testing workloads are set to rise sharply. Firms that recalibrate their processes now — from risk assessment to spare parts logistics — will be the ones ready when the regulatory wave hits in 2027.
