Nokia is charting a dual course that spans national security and next-generation telecom infrastructure, with fresh moves in both arenas this week that underscore its transformation from a hardware stalwart into a software-centric, AI-enabled player. The Finnish group’s stock responded positively, rising 3.05% on Thursday to settle at €12.52, adding to a year-to-date surge of 124.77%.

Defense Contract Targets Drone Threats

The company’s defense arm, Nokia Defense, has joined a consortium formed by the Finnish Border Guard to develop a nationwide counter-drone system. The project aims to create a sovereign infrastructure that is independent of foreign technology providers, with Nokia supplying the network backbone for secure connectivity and real-time data exchange. The solution will be mounted on ground vehicles and vessels, enabling threat detection across diverse terrains.

Financial terms were not disclosed. The technical solutions are scheduled for comprehensive testing in 2027 and early 2028. Mikko Hautala, chairman of Nokia Defense, described the goal as delivering “high resilience for national security operations.” The outcome of that evaluation phase could determine whether Nokia Defense transitions from a niche supplier to an established player in the military market.

AI Partnerships Accelerate

Alongside the defense push, Nokia is aggressively expanding its AI-powered networking capabilities. Over the course of two days, it announced four separate partnerships and integrations. On June 24, Nokia deepened its existing collaboration with HCLTech, integrating four AI-driven rApps into its SMO marketplace. These applications handle anomaly detection, energy optimization, and traffic load balancing. The same day, it struck a deal with Aira Technologies that links Aira’s Naavik One platform with Nokia’s MantaRay SMO to enable closed-loop network functions — meaning the network can detect and resolve issues autonomously without human intervention.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nokia?

The following day, Nokia unveiled its integration of Google’s Gemini large language model into its network software, a move that aims to allow telecom operators, cloud providers, and data centers to automate complex operations. Separately, Nokia plans to run its entire Autonomous Network Fabric on Amazon Web Services by the end of 2026, leveraging Amazon Bedrock to deliver commercial Level 4 autonomy — networks that effectively self-configure and self-heal.

The addressable market is substantial. According to Accenture, approximately 79% of telecom operators still operate at Level 0 or Level 1 automation. Nokia’s internal metrics suggest its own automation solutions already achieve rates above 90%, with service deployment times under four hours and network interruptions of less than one minute per year. The company also reports that network-slice rollouts can be accelerated by up to 85%, while operational disruptions can be halved.

Hardware sales are benefiting too. Following the acquisition of Infinera, Nokia’s revenue from AI and cloud clients grew 49% year-on-year in the first quarter.

Nokia at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Stock Momentum and Technical Picture

Despite the recent gains, Nokia shares remain 16.4% below the all-time high of €14.97 reached in early June. The relative strength index stands at 52.4, indicating neutral momentum — neither overbought nor oversold. The stock trades roughly 7% above its 50-day moving average, reflecting a steady but not overheated uptrend. From the 52-week low of €3.49 in August 2025, the shares have more than tripled.

The twin tracks — defense and AI-driven networking — provide Nokia with two distinct growth catalysts. The 2027 test phase for the drone-defense system will be a critical milestone, while the more immediate challenge is proving that Level 4 autonomy can be delivered commercially by the end of 2026. Investors will be watching customer deployments for evidence that Nokia’s ambitious roadmap translates into tangible revenue.
