Novo Nordisk’s share price has clawed back ground from March lows, driven by a massive buyback programme and a fresh analyst upgrade from HSBC. Yet the rally is unfolding against a backdrop of technical overextension and divergent analyst views, leaving the stock in a tug-of-war between structural support and competitive headwinds.

The pharmaceutical giant closed Monday at €43.06, up 20.63% over the past 30 days and 2.66% in the last seven trading sessions. The advance has trimmed the year-to-date decline to 3.63%, though the stock remains 27.29% lower than a year ago. HSBC last week raised its price target to 300 Danish kroner from 280 kroner, a vote of confidence in the company’s outlook. Not all analysts are convinced, however: one current rating carries a “hold” recommendation with a target of just $42, roughly in line with Monday’s close, citing a weak 2026 outlook and rising pricing pressure in the GLP-1 market.

Underpinning the recovery is a steady stream of share repurchases. Under a buyback framework of up to 15 billion Danish kroner authorised in February 2026, the company has already bought back 23,009,179 B-shares since the start. The current tranche, launched on 6 May under EU Safe Harbour rules, targets up to 11.2 billion kroner in purchases by 1 February 2027. Between 29 June and 3 July alone, Novo Nordisk snapped up an additional 1 million B-shares, bringing the total held in treasury to 40,194,480 shares — exactly 0.9% of the company’s total capital. The average price paid since February is around 270 kroner per share, with total spending of 6.2 billion kroner, equivalent to 41% of the overall budget.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

Technically, the stock has rallied above key moving averages. It now trades 10.75% above the 50-day simple moving average of €38.88 and 5.64% above the 200-day line of €40.76. The 14-day relative strength index stands at 67.4, edging toward overbought territory, while the 30-day annualised volatility clocks in at 31.47%. The primary source noted an RSI of nearly 69, reinforcing the message that the recent pace of gains may be unsustainable in the near term.

The buyback’s structural impact is clear: a shrinking share count automatically boosts earnings per share and provides a consistent buyer in the market. Yet the stock still sits 29.64% below its 12-month high of €61.20 from last July, despite a 42.35% rebound from the March trough of €30.25. That gap highlights the magnitude of the earlier sell-off, triggered by intensifying competition in the obesity-drug space and uncertainty around Novo Nordisk’s growth trajectory.

The half-year results, due in the coming weeks, will serve as the next major catalyst. They will test whether the current rally reflects a genuine improvement in fundamentals or merely a technical bounce fuelled by buyback demand and short-covering. Until then, the stock remains a study in contrasts: a buyback machine supporting the price from below, while analyst scepticism and overbought signals cap the upside.
