Novo Nordisk is mounting a multi-front counteroffensive in the battle for the obesity and diabetes market, deploying an ultra?long?acting implant, a once?weekly insulin, and an oral version of Wegovy simultaneously. The Danish pharma giant’s shares have recovered 16.4% over the past 30 days, recently changing hands at EUR 43.17, though the stock remains 29.5% below its 52?week high of EUR 61.20 set in July 2025.

Oral Wegovy Tablet Reaches U.S. Pharmacies with Tiered Pricing

The oral Wegovy tablet, now stocked at more than 70,000 U.S. pharmacies including chains such as CVS and Costco, has generated over 3 million prescriptions within its first five months — predominantly from patients new to GLP?1 therapy. Clinical data shows daily administration of the pill yields weight loss of roughly 17% over one year.

To gain an edge against Eli Lilly’s competing products, Novo Nordisk has introduced a staggered pricing strategy. The 1.5 mg starter dose costs approximately $5 per day, or about $149 monthly. The 4 mg dose is priced at $149 until April 15, after which it rises to $199, while the highest dose will cost $299 per month. Patients with private insurance often pay as little as $25 out?of?pocket.

Medicare Prescriptions Surge, but Penetration Remains Low

Since the FDA approved Wegovy in March 2024 to reduce cardiovascular risk — unlocking Medicare Part D coverage — prescriptions have jumped 598% within six months, according to data released on July 9. Total monthly scripts climbed from roughly 367,000 to more than 868,000, a 136.4% increase. Yet the USC Schaeffer Center reports that fewer than 1% of the 3.6 million eligible Medicare beneficiaries have actually filled a prescription, largely because of high copayments and restrictive insurance plans. A pilot program called the “Medicare GLP?1 Bridge” aims to improve access, but it is set to expire in 2027.

Weekly Insulin Awiqli Launches in India

On July 10, Novo Nordisk commercialised Awiqli in India — the world’s first once?weekly basal insulin. The product reduces annual injections from 365 to 52, a major convenience for the country’s roughly 101 million diabetes patients. Awiqli costs about INR 261 per week. The ONWARDS clinical programme, involving more than 4,000 adult participants, demonstrated superior HbA1c reduction compared to daily insulin glargine.

Implant Deal Adds a Different Delivery Route

A separate partnership with California?based Vivani Medical targets NPM?139, an ultra?long?acting semaglutide implant for weight management. The technology, called NanoPortal, is not exclusive to Novo Nordisk — neither the implant nor the underlying platform is tied to the Danish company. Vivani expects to launch a first human study in mid?2026, using the injected Wegovy as the comparator. The trial will assess safety, pharmacokinetics, and tolerability, with a view toward a subsequent Phase II dose?finding study.

Analyst Views Remain Split Despite Buyback Support

The various pipeline updates land amid mixed analyst sentiment. HSBC lifted its price target from DKK 280 to DKK 300 but maintained a “Hold” rating, citing lingering questions about total addressable market and so?called “overhang compounders.” Danske Bank is more bullish, setting a DKK 365 price target with a “Buy” recommendation. A broader S&P Global survey of 14 Wall Street analysts yields a consensus “Buy” rating and an average price target of $46.72, with a range of $39.56 to $64.19.

Part of the optimism stems from the oral pill’s potential: HSBC now expects peak sales above DKK 15 billion from oral semaglutide from 2034 onward. In the UK, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has cleared Wegovy for MASH — a liver disease with moderate-to?advanced fibrosis — though the cost?effectiveness body NICE has yet to decide on NHS reimbursement.

Novo Nordisk at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Supporting the share price, Novo Nordisk’s buyback programme, authorised in February 2026 for up to DKK 15 billion, has already retired over 23 million B?shares. The current tranche, running under EU safe?harbour rules since May 6, allows purchases of up to DKK 11.2 billion through February 1, 2027.

Stock Recovery Has Legs but Competitive Pressure Persists

The stock has rebounded 42.7% from its March low of EUR 30.25, and the market capitalisation now stands at roughly EUR 189.31 billion. With a relative?strength index of 64.4, the shares are approaching overbought territory, supported by annualised volatility of about 30%. CEO Mike Doustdar continues to defend the pipeline, expecting approval of the GLP?1/amylin combination CagriSema by the end of 2026 while accelerating development of the candidate Zenagamtide. Analysts broadly expect the obesity market to be split between Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly well into the 2030s, with further bolt?on acquisitions likely to reinforce Novo Nordisk’s position. For now, the combination of a new delivery implant, the weekly insulin rollout, and the oral pill’s early uptake is giving the recovery fresh momentum — even as Eli Lilly’s rival products Mounjaro, Zepbound, and Foundayo continue to eat into market share in Korea and the U.S.
