Novo Nordisk’s shares jumped 3.21% to €38.90 on Friday, a rebound that appeared to dismiss a $25 million ransomware demand as investors instead latched onto a blockbuster performance of the company’s oral Wegovy pill. The stock has now clawed back nearly 29% from its 52-week low of €30.25 set in March, though it remains 13% in the red for the year.

Since the US launch of the oral version of Wegovy in January, more than three million prescriptions have been written, with over 80% of those patients using a GLP-1 therapy for the first time. That rapid uptake convinced analysts at Nordea to upgrade Novo Nordisk from “Hold” to “Buy” and lift their price target to DKK 350. The key point, they argue, is that the pill is expanding the market rather than cannibalising sales of the injectable version.

The company has also notched regulatory wins beyond weight loss. Japan approved Wegovy’s injectable formulation for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) in patients with moderate to severe fibrosis. In the UK, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) now recommends the drug for preventing heart attacks and strokes, citing clinical data showing a 20% reduction in risk.

To secure its long-term pipeline, the Novo Nordisk Foundation, the company’s main shareholder, unveiled a six-year innovation programme for cardiometabolic diseases backed by €60 million. The first research laboratory is due to open in London in June 2026, with additional sites in Germany and Italy following later this year. The goal is to accelerate the translation of academic discoveries into approved medicines.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

Despite the bullish headlines, caution remains. Deutsche Bank rates the stock “Neutral” with a DKK 290 price target, warning of a looming “patent cliff” in 2031 that could put roughly $30 billion in annual revenue at risk. The patent on semaglutide in China expired this spring, opening the door for generics. Novo Nordisk is racing to secure oral Wegovy approval in China to defend its estimated 65% share of the new obesity-drug market.

Adding a more sinister layer to the week’s events, the hacking group FulcrumSec breached Novo Nordisk’s systems and exfiltrated large quantities of sensitive corporate data, including internal drug files and clinical trial results. Management refused to pay the $25 million ransom, and the hackers subsequently published some of the stolen material. The market, however, largely ignored the incident, treating the operational momentum as the overriding factor. Analysts note that while the cyberattack poses long-term legal and competitive risks – particularly if proprietary formulas or patient data are misused – it does not threaten near-term cash flow or the dividend yield of roughly 4%.

Technically, the stock has now reclaimed its 50-day moving average of €36.99, a bullish signal after months of underperformance. The next catalyst will be the results of the ZEUS study, which could provide additional support for the oral Wegovy franchise. If those data come in positive, the shares may extend their recovery from the 52-week high of €65.20 that looks increasingly distant.

Novo Nordisk at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

For now, Novo Nordisk’s narrative is dominated by the success of its pill-based strategy, a fact that allowed the company to shrug off a major cybersecurity breach. But the patent cliff and the potential fallout from the hack ensure the stock’s path ahead will not be clean.
