Nvidia shares edged higher on Tuesday, climbing 1.44 percent to €180.66, as a broad recovery in semiconductor stocks lifted the sector from a recent sell-off. But the modest gain masks a flurry of strategic activity: a newly disclosed cloud computing stake, a major pharmaceutical AI deployment, and fresh open-source software tools — all of which arrive just as Advanced Micro Devices finally fields a concrete rival to Nvidia’s flagship AI systems.

AMD’s Helios rack-scale system, unveiled this week, is set for delivery later this year to customers including Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI and Oracle. It targets Nvidia’s Grace-Blackwell and Vera-Rubin platforms, marking the first time in the current generation of AI infrastructure that AMD has a production-ready competitor on the table. Market share statistics, however, remain starkly lopsided. The Futurum Group pegs Nvidia’s share of data-centre GPUs at above 95 percent, with AMD stalling at roughly 4.5 percent. Futurum’s CEO told CNBC that AMD could carve out 20 to 25 percent of the market if Helios gains traction — a mid-term scenario that would dent Nvidia’s dominance, but hardly an overnight upheaval.

On the same day the AMD news broke, Nvidia revealed a 9.3 percent passive stake in cloud infrastructure provider Nebius Group via a Schedule 13G filing with the SEC. The holding comprises 22.3 million shares, the bulk of which — 21.07 million — are tied to warrants from a $2 billion investment in Nebius on March 11, 2026. Nvidia cannot exercise those warrants or sell the underlying shares before September 11, 2026, and the filing makes clear that the stake does not aim at control. Nebius shares reacted positively, closing at $182.62 (up 2.76 percent) before adding nearly 4 percent in after-hours trading, helped by a freshly secured $775 million GPU-backed loan and a computing services deal with Reflection AI worth more than $1 billion. Northland Capital raised its price target for Nebius from $248 to $410, while Freedom Capital upgraded the stock to Buy with a $200 target.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?

At the same time, Nvidia deepened its push into physical AI and life sciences. The company expanded its Agent Toolkit with three new Omniverse libraries — ovrtx for sensor simulation, ovphysx for GPU-accelerated physics, and CAD-to-SimReady — all released as open source on GitHub. Partners such as SideFX, PTC and ForgeCAD are already on board, with the RTX Spark hardware series expected in autumn 2026. More notably, Bristol Myers Squibb has purchased a DGX SuperPOD powered by Nvidia’s Vera-Rubin architecture for drug discovery. According to the company, AI tools already cut development timelines by 20 to 30 percent, a figure that could rise to 50 percent. Vera-Rubin itself delivers ten times the performance per watt of its predecessors, an efficiency gain that is critical as energy constraints increasingly haunt the data-centre buildout.

Nvidia’s stock, while up on the day, remains in correction territory. Tuesday’s close of €180.66 sits just a hair below the 50-day moving average of €181.52, while the 200-day average of €165.75 provides a deeper support level roughly 9 percent lower. The shares are 10.8 percent off the 52-week high of €202.50 reached in mid-May. Monday’s session had ended at €178.10 after a weekly drop of nearly 4 percent, meaning Tuesday’s bounce only partially repaired the damage.

Wall Street remains overwhelmingly bullish. The consensus rating is Strong Buy, with average price targets of $301.62 (S&P Global) and $309.75 (Benzinga, based on 32 analysts). The range is unusually wide: Baird stands at $500, Deutsche Bank at $215 and KeyBanc at $330 as of mid-July. Yet there are dissenting voices. Investor David Desjardins rates Nvidia a Strong Sell, arguing that at a $5 trillion market capitalisation — roughly 7 percent of the S&P 500 — the growth story is hitting physical limits. He points to Goldman Sachs data projecting US data-centre power consumption rising from 31 gigawatts in 2025 to 66 gigawatts in 2027, eating up 8.5 percent of peak grid load, a bottleneck that could cap Nvidia’s expansion.

With earnings due on August 25, 2026, the market expects Nvidia to report adjusted earnings per share of $2.12 on revenue of about $93.5 billion. The next real test, however, may come not from the income statement but from hyperscaler spending plans. If Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI and Oracle allocate their next data-centre budgets to AMD’s Helios alongside Nvidia’s Blackwell and Vera-Rubin families, the competitive balance in AI chips could begin to shift — gradually, but for the first time in years, perceptibly.
