Nvidia’s $3.2 Billion Glass Bet and Quantum Leap: A New Blueprint for the AI Empire

Nvidia closes at €182.60 record as it invests $500M in Corning for AI data center optics, unveils quantum models, and faces a $2.5B chip smuggling allegation.

Nvidia closed the week at a record €182.60, but the road to that all-time high was anything but smooth. Between a blockbuster fiber-optic deal with Corning, a push into quantum computing, and an uncomfortable smuggling report, the chip giant is juggling multiple narratives just days before what could be its most consequential earnings report yet.

The Optics of Scale: Why Nvidia Is Betting Big on Glass

The headline move was a sweeping partnership with specialty glassmaker Corning, designed to rewire the physical backbone of AI data centers. Nvidia paid $500 million for warrants and equity stakes, securing the right to invest up to $3.2 billion in the company. The warrants give Nvidia the option to buy as many as 15 million Corning shares at $180 apiece.

Corning, in turn, is embarking on a massive expansion. It will build three new manufacturing plants in North Carolina and Texas, creating more than 3,000 jobs and tenfolding its U.S. production capacity for optical connectivity. The goal: replace copper cables with light-based links between GPUs in AI clusters. Nvidia’s “Spectrum-X Photonics” Ethernet switch architecture, which integrates photonics directly into the chip, promises five times better energy efficiency and ten times higher fault tolerance than conventional solutions.

CEO Jensen Huang framed the move as part of “the largest infrastructure build in human history,” arguing that artificial intelligence is becoming global base infrastructure. Investors bought the vision: Corning shares surged 12%, while Nvidia added nearly 6%.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?

Quantum Computing: The Next Frontier

Alongside the Corning deal, Nvidia unveiled “Nvidia Ising,” its first family of open-source quantum-AI models. These tools aim to accelerate quantum processors, cutting calibration times from days to just a few hours. The decoding models use three-dimensional neural networks to perform real-time error correction, tripling accuracy over existing industry standards.

Analysts at Resonance estimate the quantum computing market could hit $11 billion by 2030. For Nvidia, the play is less about near-term revenue and more about positioning for the next computing paradigm—one where classical and quantum architectures converge.

The Smuggling Shadow

Not everything was rosy. On Friday, Bloomberg reported that OBON Corp., a Bangkok-based entity referred to as “Company-1” by U.S. prosecutors, was allegedly involved in a smuggling network for Nvidia chips. Alibaba was named as one of several end customers.

The U.S. Department of Justice indicted three people in March, including Super Micro co-founder Yih-Shyan Liaw. The accusation: servers with Nvidia chips were routed through Taiwan to Southeast Asia, repackaged in unmarked boxes, and smuggled into China. Prosecutors put the damages at a minimum of $2.5 billion.

Neither OBON nor Alibaba is named in the indictment. Alibaba told Reuters it has no business relationship with Super Micro or OBON. Nvidia itself is not charged. A spokesperson stressed that the company expects strict compliance from partners and is cooperating with authorities. For now, the risk is real but not immediate.

Earnings Countdown: The Numbers That Matter

All eyes are now on May 20, when Nvidia reports first-quarter results. Analysts expect revenue of $78.8 billion—up nearly 79% year-over-year—and earnings per share of $1.77, more than double last year’s figure.

The tailwinds are strong. Hyperscalers are opening their wallets: Meta raised its investment ceiling to $145 billion, while Microsoft committed $190 billion for 2026. Of 37 analysts covering the stock, all rate it “Strong Buy,” with a median price target of $270.73. Rosenblatt is the most bullish at $325.

Since its March low, the stock has climbed roughly 32% and now trades about 13% above its 50-day moving average. But Mizuho analyst Jordan Klein warns of a potential “changing of the guard in AI,” noting that competitors like AMD and Micron have been outperforming recently. Whether that’s a temporary pattern or a structural shift in sentiment will become clearer after the May 20 report.
