Plug Power slips 4% but rallies 79% YTD on Q1 beat, margin improvement, UK hydrogen project FID, and $275M asset sale program.

Plug Power’s stock slipped 4% on Friday to €3.40, stepping back from a 52-week high of €3.56 reached just two days earlier. The pullback, however, does little to erase a year-to-date gain of 79% — a rally driven not by speculation but by a quarter of concrete operational progress.

Q1 Revenue Beats Estimates as Margins Turn Less Negative

The company’s first-quarter 2026 results provided the fuel for the recent run-up. Revenue climbed to $163.5 million, a 22% increase year over year and well above the analyst consensus of $139.7 million. Even more telling was the move in gross margin, which improved from negative 55% to negative 13% — still in the red, but narrowing rapidly.

Plug Power’s adjusted loss per share shrank from $0.17 to $0.08, while the reported net loss per share fell from $0.18 to $0.08. The net loss for the quarter stood at $245 million. The company continues to burn cash, but CEO Crespo has set a clear target: positive EBITDA by the end of 2026.

UK Hydrogen Project Reaches Final Investment Decision

A significant milestone came this week with the final investment decision for the Barrow project in Cumbria, England. Plug Power will supply six 5-megawatt electrolyzers to produce green hydrogen for the local Kimberly-Clark plant, which expects to cut its natural gas consumption by up to 50%.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?

Barrow is the first of three UK-based projects Plug Power secured under the government’s hydrogen subsidy program. The remaining two — in Trafford and Langage — are still awaiting their respective investment decisions. The Barrow go-ahead underscores Plug Power’s ability to convert pipeline projects into revenue-generating assets.

Cash Position Strengthened by Asset Sales

The company ended the first quarter with more than $802 million in cash on hand. To extend that runway without issuing new shares, Plug Power is monetizing its hydrogen-related assets. A deal with Stream Data Centers, expected to close in June, should bring in roughly $142 million, and the total asset sale program is targeting around $275 million.

CFO Middleton stated that current liquidity is sufficient to fund operations through the end of 2026, with no immediate plans for equity dilution.

Institutional Buying Picks Up, Analysts Remain Cautious

While Wall Street remains wary — the consensus from 20 analysts is “Hold,” with an average price target of $3.62 — institutional investors have been piling in. During the first quarter, 236 institutions increased their positions. BlackRock raised its stake by nearly 30%, Renaissance Technologies almost doubled its holding, and UBS added 63%.

Among sell-side analysts, opinions diverge sharply. UBS rates the stock “Neutral” with a $4.00 target, close to current levels. B. Riley is more bullish, issuing a “Buy” with a $5.00 target, citing margin improvement and Plug Power’s in-house hydrogen production in the U.S. Some longer-term models project revenue of $1.2 billion by 2029 and a profit of roughly $138.6 million.

Plug Power at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

A Clear Profitability Roadmap

Management has laid out a three-stage path to sustained profitability: positive EBITDAS by the end of 2026, an operating profit by the end of 2027, and full profitability by the end of 2028. The targets hinge on volume growth, margin expansion, and disciplined cash management.

For now, June is the first checkpoint. If the Stream Data Centers deal closes as scheduled, Plug Power will have delivered a concrete liquidity win — and cleared a hurdle that could keep the stock’s upward trajectory intact.
