Plug Power's Path to Profitability Gains Momentum with Landmark Deal and BlackRock Backing

Plug Power's new leadership is making tangible progress on its financial turnaround, securing a major contract and attracting significant institutional support. The hydrogen specialist recently won a deal to supply a 275-megawatt electrolyzer system for the Courant project in Quebec, Canada. The system will produce low-carbon ammonia for the mining industry, a milestone that sent the company's shares soaring 11.6% on the day of the announcement.
This operational win is bolstered by a crucial vote of confidence from Wall Street. Recent regulatory filings show asset manager BlackRock has significantly increased its stake, now holding approximately 147 million shares. This gives the institutional investor a 10.5% ownership position in Plug Power.
Financially, the company is showing its first green shoots. For the fourth quarter, Plug Power reported its first-ever positive gross profit of $5.5 million. The gross margin turned positive to 2.4%, a dramatic reversal from the negative 122.5% margin recorded in the same period a year prior. Management attributes this improvement to higher volumes and cost-reduction initiatives.
To solidify its balance sheet, the firm is executing a comprehensive liquidity plan. A central component is the sale of its Project Gateway site to Stream Data Centers for a minimum of $132.5 million. This transaction is part of a broader $275 million liquidity initiative designed to secure the company's financial footing through 2026.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?
Under CEO Jose Luis Crespo, who took the helm in March, the company is actively engaging with investors to outline its strategic vision. Crespo recently concluded a two-day roadshow in Toronto and Montreal, fielding questions from institutional investors. The communication strategy extends to retail investors, with Crespo scheduled to host a Reddit "Ask Me Anything" session on April 16th. Topics will include the company's strategic direction, its electrolyzer business, and the expansion of its U.S. hydrogen network in states like Georgia and Tennessee.
The management team has laid out a clear, multi-year roadmap to reach profitability. The current targets aim for positive EBITDA by the end of 2026, followed by a positive operating result in 2027. Full corporate profitability is slated for 2028. With roughly 80% of expected revenue for the current year already visible, the board anticipates 2026 sales growth to be in line with 2025 levels.
Despite these advances, significant challenges remain. The number of outstanding shares has ballooned by approximately 50% over the past twelve months, a substantial dilution that complicates shareholders' ability to benefit directly from improved business conditions. Furthermore, the company faces class-action lawsuits related to a $1.66 billion loan program from the U.S. Department of Energy, activities around which were suspended in late 2025.
Plug Power at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The stock has shown recent strength, climbing nearly 26% over the last 30 days. Shares closed at €2.31 on Wednesday. As Plug Power executes its operational and financial strategy, the market is closely watching to see if these foundational steps can translate into sustained shareholder value.
