POET Technologies: From May Peak to Legal Pit — How a $22 Analyst Target Collided with a 65% Rout
Published on 07/21/2026 at 07:50 | Redaktion boerse-global.deA single order cancellation on April 27 sent POET Technologies' shares into a tailspin from which they have yet to recover. The Canadian photonics specialist saw its stock plunge 47.3% that day after Marvell pulled orders for Celestial AI components, citing an alleged breach of confidentiality. Since then, the slide has deepened: the shares closed recently at €6.52, a full 65.4% below the 52-week peak of €18.84 set in May. Over the past 30 days alone, the stock has shed 38.5% of its value, with annualized volatility topping 96%.
The fallout quickly turned legal. Law firm Levi & Korsinsky filed a class-action complaint covering trades between April 1 and April 27, with the lead-plaintiff deadline expiring at the end of June. The suit points to what it calls misleading disclosures: POET generated just $2.3 million in revenue since 2020 while its share count ballooned 303% to roughly 153 million shares outstanding since the end of 2022. Additional allegations center on errors in the company’s PFIC tax classification. Chief Financial Officer Thomas Mika had earlier confirmed the Marvell order tied to Celestial AI and pointed to pending orders from Foxconn and Luxshare — orders whose absence has since added to the uncertainty that has kept retail traders unusually bullish on social platforms despite the rout.
Short sellers have piled in alongside the legal risk. As of June 30, 27.09 million shares were sold short, representing 17.73% of the float — barely changed from the prior reading of 27.17 million. At an average daily volume of 25.22 million shares, it would take just 1.4 trading days to cover all short positions, a figure that makes a sudden squeeze technically possible but far from assured. Earlier in the spring, Wolfpack Research had disclosed a short position while short interest climbed from 6.1% to 8.6%. Chart analysts have turned cautious too: one research service downgraded the stock to a sell, pointing to a support zone between $7.30 and $7.60 and nearby resistance.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying POET Technologies?
Yet a handful of analysts remain firmly bullish. 24/7 Wall St. set a price target of $22.23, implying a 163% upside from the $8.46 level used in the analysis, with even higher targets projected for subsequent years. The thesis rests heavily on the Lumilens deal, which started with an initial order worth $50 million and could expand to as much as $500 million over five years. POET’s first-quarter results for fiscal 2026 showed revenue of $503,389, a 201.9% year-over-year jump, though the net loss came to $0.08 per share. The company has guided for 30,000 optical engines in 2026. Institutional names have taken positions: Citadel holds between 5.1% and 5.9% of shares, while Jane Street owns 6.8%. On the balance sheet, cash reserves stand at roughly $430 million, offset by an accumulated deficit of approximately $291 million.
The broader semiconductor sell-off has added to the pressure. At one point the chip sector posted its worst week in over a year, fueled by valuation concerns tied to a new Chinese language model. While mega-cap names rebounded, POET largely sat out the recovery, trading about 36% below its 50-day moving average. For investors, the stock remains a high-wire act: ambitious growth targets and a well-funded pipeline on one side, and a class-action suit, rising short interest, and execution bottlenecks on the other.
