Dr. Sandeep Kumar joined as chief operating officer on May 11, reporting directly to chairman and CEO Suresh Venkatesan. Kumar spent more than 18 years at Silicon Labs, most recently as senior vice president of global operations with oversight of manufacturing, supply chains and quality assurance. His earlier career included stints at Agere Systems, Lucent Technologies and AT&T Bell Labs. The mandate is clear: transition POET from a development-stage photonics company into a volume manufacturer of optical modules, particularly for the AI infrastructure and data center markets. Kumar’s immediate focus is on the company’s Malaysian facility, where he will oversee the build-out of production lines based on the optical interposer platform. The target is to deliver high-speed engines rated at 800G and 1.6T, with management previously stating a goal of shipping more than 30,000 optical engines in fast and high-power segments during 2026.

The rally comes just weeks after a severe setback. On April 27, the stock cratered 47% after Marvell Technology canceled orders, triggering a wave of selling that erased billions in market value. The appointment of a seasoned operations executive is seen as a direct response to that vulnerability. Investors now want to see whether Kumar can address the supply-chain and quality challenges that have kept POET from translating its technology into meaningful revenue.

Management has said it will provide U.S. shareholders with QEF data and is exploring a possible redomiciling to the United States. The deadline for lead plaintiff applications in the proceedings is June 29.
