Renk Deepens Naval Roots With David Brown Deal Even as Record Orders Face Budget Clouds

The July picture for Renk is one of operational highs and financial headwinds, with the company wrapping up a quarter marked by a record order intake even as political and delivery uncertainties temper the rally. The Augsburg-based defense specialist, known for its tank gearboxes, has pushed deeper into maritime propulsion with the acquisition of David Brown Defence from Stellex Capital Management, a deal aimed at broadening its footprint beyond land systems. That strategic move came alongside a $700 million order from the U.S. military for land-system supplies, landed by a Renk subsidiary in late June, and a first-quarter order intake of €582.3 million — a record for an opening quarter.
Yet the share price tells a different story. On Friday, Renk stock closed at €44.10, up 3.30% on the day, but still nursing a year-to-date loss of 18.26%. The 52-week high of €88.73, set on 3 October 2025, is now more than 50% away. While the management’s pre-closing update for the second quarter confirmed the full-year guidance and revealed a fresh all-time high for quarterly order intake — keeping the €2 billion annual target within reach — analysts at mwb research responded by trimming their price target from €50 to €48 while sticking with a "Hold" rating. Their caution stems from two fronts: leaked documents pointing to a potentially tighter German defense procurement budget for 2027, and delays on deliveries to Israel that are pushing €80 million to €100 million of revenue into the second half.
The profit picture, however, is brightening. mwb research noted that adjusted EBIT continues to outpace revenue growth, suggesting margin expansion. That view gets a more emphatic endorsement from Jefferies, which retained a "Buy" rating and a €60 price target — implying roughly 40% upside from current levels. Following an analyst meeting ahead of the numbers, Jefferies concluded that Renk’s second-quarter operating result could land at the top end of its own forecast, driven by improved margins. The gap between this bullish fundamental outlook and the persistent capital outflows from the stock remains a puzzle that only convincing half-year figures may solve.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk?
In parallel, BlackRock has been quietly adding to its position. The U.S. asset manager disclosed via a voting-rights notification that it has raised its stake in Renk to a total of 4.12%, with 2.57% held as direct voting rights, crossing the threshold on 14 July. The buying comes during a period of share price weakness, a pattern that suggests institutional appetite for defense names even as near-term sentiment sours.
On the charts, the stock has been range-bound since mid-May, oscillating roughly between €40 and €42. A break above the 200-day moving average at €54.38 would be needed to reverse the downtrend technically; the current price sits nearly 19% below that level. The relative strength index at 45.6 signals neither overbought nor oversold conditions, while 30-day volatility of around 51% confirms the stock’s sensitivity to defense-sector news flow. On a weekly basis, Renk eked out a 1.19% gain, but the monthly performance remains negative at –6.24%.
The next test comes on 6 August, when Renk publishes its full half-year report and holds an analyst conference. Between now and then, the stock is likely to swing between the tailwinds of a record backlog and the headwinds of delivery shifts and budget leaks. For a company that has just expanded into naval propulsion and is sitting on a U.S. Army order worth $700 million, the August numbers will show whether the underlying operational momentum can overcome the political clouds gathering over 2027.
