Despite a €7bn order backlog and record Q1 results, Renk's shares trade 27% lower YoY. Management aims to bridge the gap at upcoming defense conferences.

Renk's Record Backlog vs Stock Slump: Defense Sector Disconnect

The Augsburg-based gearbox specialist heads into a critical week with its order book bulging and a €1.5bn revenue target for 2026 already more than nine-tenths secured by contracts. Yet the share price sits at €47.95 – roughly 27% below where it traded a year ago and 46% shy of its all-time high. That disconnect provides the backdrop for management appearances at the DB Defence Conference in London and Baden-Baden, where executives will attempt to bridge the gap between operational momentum and market skepticism.

Operationally, Renk is firing on all cylinders. First-quarter orders hit a record €582m, pushing the total backlog to nearly €7bn. Revenue climbed to around €284m in the period, with the adjusted operating margin landing at a robust 15%. The vehicle segment provided the biggest propulsion, thanks largely to fresh orders for the Puma infantry fighting vehicle. The full-year targets remain unchanged: revenue above €1.5bn and operating profit of up to €285m.

Brussels is adding further tailwind. The European Council has accelerated defence spending plans, funnelling additional funds into drones and precision weapons through 2030 – a direct boon for Renk, which aims to lift its defence revenue share to 90% by the end of the decade.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk?

Recent trade fairs underscored the company’s embedded position in next-generation armoured platforms. At Eurosatory in Paris, the joint venture LRMV – a partnership between Leonardo and Rheinmetall – pitched a tank programme for Italy based on the KF51 Panther, valued at around €8.2bn. PSM, a KNDS-Rheinmetall joint venture, showcased the "MBT Vision 2032" concept as a potential Leopard 2 successor. Renk already holds a strong supplier role on the existing Leopard 2 fleet. KNDS also unveiled its CAPINT design, which relies on running gear technology where Renk gearboxes are standard. Separately, Renk teamed up with Finland’s Patria to display a heavy unmanned ground vehicle concept, pairing the TRACKX platform with the newly developed HSWL 076 gearbox.

That collaboration signals a broader strategic pivot. Renk is positioning itself as an architect of software-driven military vehicles rather than a mere component maker. The unmanned tracked vehicle shown at Eurosatory embodies that ambition.

Investors, however, remain unmoved. The stock has lost 13% since the start of the year and trades well below its 200-day moving average of €57.74. The relative strength index sits at 45.6, a neutral reading that offers no clear directional signal. A recovery of nearly 14% from the 52-week low of €42.12 provides scant comfort. The share price also remains below the 50-day line, confirming a short-term downtrend.

Management has two immediate opportunities to reset the narrative. The DB Defence Conference kicks off on 22 June in London, followed by a presentation in Baden-Baden on 24 June. A pre-close call on 16 July will offer preliminary hints on second-quarter performance, with full half-year figures due on 6 August. Between now and then, the market will be watching closely to see whether operational strength can finally arrest the stock’s slide.
