Renk shares plunge 20% YTD but attract institutional buying from BlackRock, a CEO contract extension to 2032, and analyst price targets implying 47% upside.

The Augsburg-based drivetrain specialist is living two lives at once. On the trading screen, Renk’s stock has been mauled: down 20.28% since January and 14.68% in the past week alone, closing Wednesday at €43.99 before edging up to €44.45 on Thursday. Yet behind the scenes, a raft of bullish signals is piling up – a major institution raising its stake, the chief executive extending his tenure through 2032, and multiple analysts pointing to a mispriced opportunity.

The disconnect has become so wide that even as Goldman Sachs trimmed its price target from €70 to €65 on the back of first-quarter results adjustments, the implied upside from current levels has swollen to roughly 47%. Analyst Sam Burgess kept his “Neutral” rating, describing the move as a fine-tuning rather than a loss of faith. The stock is now trading less than half its 52-week high of €88.73, reached last October.

That gap between price and perception is being bridged by a notable accumulation of institutional support. BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, lifted its overall stake in Renk to 4.44% from about 3.63%, crossing the threshold on 7 May. The filing reveals a mixed structure: directly held voting rights account for 2.95%, while the remaining 1.49% sits in financial instruments, primarily securities lending. This is hardly a classic strategic entry, but for an SDAX-listed company, such a move at a time of severe price weakness sends a clear signal of institutional engagement.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk?

Alongside the BlackRock build-up, the supervisory board moved to lock in leadership continuity. CEO Alexander Sagel’s contract was extended early and now runs until March 2032 – an unusually long horizon that reflects Renk’s product cycles for defence and industrial gear systems. The company reported sales of €1.37 billion in financial year 2025, up 20%, with order intake hitting €1.57 billion. Those figures give the board confidence to plan years ahead, and the extension sends a message that execution is on track despite the market’s souring mood.

The source of the selling pressure appears to be sector-wide rather than company-specific. The broader defence segment took a hit after a disappointing earnings call from Rheinmetall, dragging Renk down with it. Analysts at both mwb research and Warburg Research argue the sell-off is overdone. mwb maintains a target of €53.00, well above the current level, though the market is currently re-rating defensive growth names across the board.

Technically, the picture remains ugly. Renk is now trading 16% below its 50-day moving average and a staggering 26.58% below the 200-day line – a gap that typically signals either persistent downward momentum or a deep value entry for those willing to bet on a mean reversion.

With management set to host an investor roadshow on 20 May, the agenda will almost certainly focus on order backlog, capacity utilisation, and the implications of rising European defence spending. After weeks of relentless selling, Renk’s backers are betting that the fundamentals will eventually outweigh the market’s short-term sentiment – but for now, the tape is telling a different story.
