For years, Rheinmetall’s stock was buoyed by a simple promise: Europe’s rearmament would funnel ever-larger contracts its way, and the share price would follow. That promise has now been severely stress-tested—and it is cracking. The cancellation of the F126 frigate program, with Defence Minister Pistorius instead awarding an estimated €12 billion in work to Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems for eight Meko A-200 frigates, has delivered a blow far beyond a single lost order. It has exposed the fragility of a defense investment thesis built more on political tailwinds than on industrial delivery.

Originally budgeted at €10 billion, the costs for the F126 program had spiralled toward €18 billion with significant delays. The government’s decision to pull the plug sends a clear signal: cost discipline is no longer negotiable, even in a “Zeitenwende” environment. For Rheinmetall, the loss of that contract caps a brutal period. The shares touched a 52-week low of €916.00, and at the current level of around €923–€946, the stock has shed more than 54% from its September 2025 high of €1,995.00. On a one-year view, the decline is roughly 41%.

A strategy in motion, but not at the same speed

The company is not standing still. The planned sale of its civilian automotive division to AEQUITA marks a decisive step toward becoming a pure-play defense contractor, pending regulatory approvals. At the same time, Rheinmetall is pushing into new domains. Its joint venture with OHB—OHB Rheinmetall Space Networks—targets the SATCOMBw Stage 4 military satellite communications system, aiming to deliver a secure communications architecture including a cyber operations centre. A separate partnership with Vantor will create a European platform for spatial reconnaissance, merging satellite and drone imagery with map data to build a real-time digital picture of the battlefield.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

On the ammunition side, a collaboration with General Atomics is exploring joint production of Vektrex precision munitions, designed to modernise existing artillery systems and improve NATO interoperability. These moves are strategically sound, but they are long-term bets—none fills the €12 billion hole left by the frigate cancellation in the near to medium term.

Technical distress without a clear catalyst

The stock’s technical indicators scream oversold. The relative strength index stands at 22.9–24, deep in territory that normally precedes a bounce. However, annualised volatility of nearly 68% suggests that any recovery may be short-lived, as the market remains jittery. The gap to the 200-day moving average exceeds 41%, underscoring the severity of the rout. With a market capitalisation of roughly €54.5 billion, Rheinmetall is no longer priced for a defensive hold; it is being valued on the premise that execution risk is real and immediate.

The trust deficit is the true damage

What the frigate cancellation has done is shatter the market’s assumption that government contracts flow automatically and reliably. Rheinmetall must now prove it can deliver large-scale projects on time and within budget before investors will restore the premium they once granted. The transformation into a focused defense system house—spanning land, sea, air, and space—makes the investment case cleaner but also more exposed. Every delay or policy shift will now translate directly into the share price.

The core question is no longer whether Europe will spend more on defense, but whether Rheinmetall can convert that spending into profitable, predictable revenue. Until that question is answered with hard results, the market will keep demanding proof—and the stock will stay pinned near its lows.
