Rival ETF Challenges Vanguard's All-World Dominance as Tech-Heavy Index Scales New Peak

01.06.2026 - 09:07:33 | boerse-global.de

Vanguard All-World ETF closes at record €163.56 as Amundi launches GDP-weighted fund with more EM exposure; tech concentration sparks debate.

Europe’s most popular global equity ETF has just notched a fresh all-time high, but the celebration is tempered by the arrival of a disruptive competitor that aims to rewrite the rules of country weighting. The Vanguard FTSE All-World UCITS ETF closed at €163.56 on 29 May 2026, good for a gain of more than 27% over the past twelve months and roughly 12% since the start of the year. Yet just one day earlier, Amundi launched a GDP-weighted version of the same index that could lure investors worried about the fund’s heavy tilt toward US technology stocks.

The challenge is structural. While Vanguard’s fund uses classic market-capitalisation weights, the new Amundi FTSE All World GDP-Weighted UCITS ETF Acc allocates country exposure according to each economy’s share of global gross domestic product, based on five-year forecasts from the International Monetary Fund that are recalibrated annually. The differences are stark: emerging markets receive more than 40% of the portfolio under Amundi’s model, a share that Vanguard’s cap-weighted approach has historically underplayed. The trade-off comes in the fee: Amundi charges an ongoing charge of 0.30% a year, against Vanguard’s 0.19%.

For now, the rally in Vanguard’s fund remains firmly in the hands of the world’s largest technology companies. At the end of May, NVIDIA Corporation topped the holdings list at 4.66% of assets, followed by Apple Inc at 3.90%, Microsoft Corp at 3.02% and Amazon.com Inc at 2.54%. Alphabet Inc, counting both share classes, added more than 4%. A month earlier these weightings were slightly lower — NVIDIA stood at 4.58% in late April — reflecting the relentless upward drift in tech valuations. The sector overall accounts for more than a quarter of the portfolio, and the ten biggest positions together represent around 24% of the fund’s €39 billion in assets under management.

That concentrated exposure has attracted investor cash at a staggering pace. In March alone, net inflows into the Vanguard ETF reached an estimated €2.1 billion, more than any other fund in Europe that month, as the shift from active to passive management accelerates. Technical indicators suggest the move is not yet exhausted: the relative strength index of 60 signals healthy upward momentum without entering overbought territory, while the 30-day annualised volatility remains below 10%. The fund’s price sits roughly 7% above its 50-day moving average and more than 11% above the 200-day measure, underscoring the durability of the trend.

The next major test comes on 22 June, when FTSE Russell performs its quarterly index rebalance. The process will adjust for initial public offerings, changes in free float and sector shifts, and is likely to trigger heavy trading volumes given the ETF’s size. For now, the underlying index holds approximately 3,700 stocks globally, offering broad diversification that keeps the fund’s swings relatively muted even as single-stock concentrations continue to climb. Whether Amundi’s alternative approach can carve out a meaningful slice of that market will depend on how many investors decide that a lower fee is worth the price of a less familiar weighting methodology.
