In just 12 months, the VanEck Morningstar Developed Markets Dividend Leaders UCITS ETF has swelled from a modest €1 billion in assets to over €8 billion — a milestone it crossed in mid-June. The growth has been staggering, but the fund’s appeal rests not on a star manager’s intuition, but on a rigid set of rules that strips emotion out of portfolio construction.

The influx accelerated in the first quarter of 2026, when the ETF collected €2.1 billion in fresh subscriptions, making it the best-selling European dividend fund and leaving even the largest Vanguard competitor behind. That tidal wave of cash coincided with a broader rotation out of technology stocks into income-oriented names, as persistent inflation and a 2% ECB deposit rate gave banks and energy producers a tailwind.

Hard caps and automatic trims

The fund’s method is straightforward: a stock can only enter the portfolio if its dividend today is at least as high as it was five years ago. The payout ratio must not exceed 75%. And no single holding is allowed to account for more than 5% of total assets. That last rule is enforced mechanically at every semi-annual rebalancing — and it recently caught Exxon Mobil, which had drifted to a 5.69% weight. The June rebalancing trimmed the oil giant back down, a move dictated purely by mathematics, not by any market call.

After the adjustment, Verizon Communications now leads the portfolio with a 4.64% allocation, followed by TotalEnergies and Nestlé. The sector tilt remains pronounced: financials account for nearly a third of the fund, energy another fifth. Geographically, the US dominates at 23.9%, with the UK (11.4%), France (10.1%) and Switzerland (9.5%) rounding out the top four.

Steady returns and a rising payout

Despite the asset gusher, the ETF has not lost its discipline on the income front. The latest quarterly dividend of €0.81 per share was paid on 10 June — the highest of the four distributions this year — and the trailing 12-month sum of €1.65 translates into a yield of roughly 3.16%. Since its 2016 launch, the fund has never skipped a quarterly payment.

Price performance has kept pace. The shares trade at €52.22, up nearly 8% year-to-date, and within 4% of the April 2026 all-time high of €54.48. The 12-month return stands at almost 24%, driven by financials and energy stocks. Over five years, the annualised gain of 17.9% handily beats the category index (15.4%) and the peer-group average (8.3%).

Low costs, high marks

At 0.38% in total annual expenses, the ETF sits in the cheapest quintile of the Global Equity Income category, where the median fund charges more than 1%. Morningstar awards it a five-star rating, reaffirmed in May 2026, and Börse Düsseldorf recently named it ETF of the month, supported by a new market maker that promises tighter spreads than on Xetra.

VanEck Morningstar Developed Markets Dividend Leaders UCITS ETF at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Technically, the fund is in a calm patch. Its 30-day volatility is a modest 8.9%, the relative strength index sits at 49 (neutral), and while the price has slipped just below the 50-day moving average, it remains 6.3% above the 200-day line — a sign of underlying trend strength.

The next scheduled rebalancing falls in December 2026, and until then the portfolio will continue to rely on the same mechanical rules that got it to €8 billion. No gut feelings required.
