Short Sellers Versus a $25 Billion Bet: The Forces Driving Bloom Energy’s Wild Ride

Bloom Energy shares see extreme 112% volatility as short sellers clash with Brookfield's $25B AI data center partnership. Analysts split after 1,200% rally, with median target 14% below current price.

The collision between a heavily shorted stock and a multibillion-dollar infrastructure commitment is producing some of the most extreme swings in Bloom Energy’s history. The fuel-cell maker’s shares have been caught in a tug-of-war between hedge funds betting against the company and a freshly expanded financing partnership with Brookfield Asset Management that aims to pour $25 billion into AI-powered data centers. The result: a 112% annualized volatility — a reading usually reserved for micro-cap speculators, not a $30 billion industrial.

Roughly 28.56 million shares, or 10.04% of the float, are currently sold short. That kind of concentrated bearish positioning leaves the stock vulnerable to a snap-back when positive news breaks — and the Brookfield announcement provided exactly that spark. After plunging 18.49% in a single session, the stock rebounded sharply, recouping most of the loss and settling at €270.50, up 1.69% on the day. The weekly performance, however, still shows a 5.91% decline, reflecting how quickly sentiment can reverse.

The source of the bears’ pain is the expanded collaboration announced between Bloom and Brookfield. The asset manager raised its commitment for Bloom-backed AI infrastructure projects from $5 billion to $25 billion. Since the partnership was formed in August 2025, joint ventures have already generated over $1.2 billion in product revenue for Bloom, including sales tied to hyperscaler projects. The capital is earmarked for “behind-the-meter” power generation — on-site electricity plants that allow AI data centers to bypass the grid entirely. CEO KR Sridhar has branded this concept “designer electricity,” positioning Bloom’s solid-oxide fuel cells as the backbone of lean, self-powered AI factories.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Bloom Energy?

Not everyone is convinced the rally is sustainable. Wells Fargo maintains an “Equal Weight” rating and a $217 price target, noting that the stock has surged more than 1,200% over the past year — far above any fundamental valuation. Morgan Stanley disagrees, sticking with “Overweight” and a $310 target. UBS raised its price objective to $322, citing favorable FERC rule changes and the “bring your own power” trend as demand drivers. Bernstein SocGen, which recently initiated coverage with a “Market Perform” rating and $276 target, acknowledges the technology’s promise but wants to see a sustainable path to free cash flow that doesn’t rely on one-off contracts. The consensus of 25 analysts — 9 buys, 5 outperform, 12 holds, and 3 sells or underperform — lands at a median price target of $267, roughly 14% below current levels. That median has more than doubled since December 2025, when it stood at about $111.

Technically, the stock is in a holding pattern. The relative strength index sits at 54.9, neutral terrain after the oversold reading from June was erased. Shares trade 14.72% above their 50-day moving average of roughly €233, but still 12.32% below the all-time high of €308.50 set on June 25. The €282 level acts as near-term resistance, while €232 provides the first support floor — coinciding with the moving average.

The next major catalyst arrives on July 30, when Bloom reports second-quarter results. Analysts expect earnings per share of $0.35, up from $0.10 a year earlier, on revenue that is projected to nearly double to $806 million from $401 million. For the next three years, consensus forecasts annual revenue growth of roughly 61%. With short covering, index rebalancing flows, and deeply split analyst opinions all competing for influence, the trading range is likely to stay wide until the earnings report provides a clearer direction.
