The structural supply deficit in the silver market remains entrenched, but it took a weak US jobs report to ignite a sharp bounce in the metal’s leveraged exchange-traded certificate. The WisdomTree Silver 3x Daily Leveraged ETC, a triple-leveraged instrument tracking silver futures, surged nearly 7% in a single session, extending its weekly gain to over 17%. That recovery, however, does little to mask the carnage of the past month: the ETC still sits roughly 51% lower over the trailing 30-day period, with annualized volatility hovering around 152%.

The catalyst came from the US labour market, which added only 57,000 new jobs in June against analyst expectations of roughly 110,000. The unemployment rate held steady at 4.2%, reinforcing the narrative of a cooling economy. The dollar index slipped about 0.4% to near 101 points, making dollar-priced silver cheaper for overseas buyers and fuelling the rally. Spot silver rose to $61.15 per ounce, though the metal remains well below its 200-day moving average of $69.88.

Federal Reserve policy is once again front and centre. Despite Fed Chair Kevin Warsh describing inflation as still too high earlier in the week, the market now assigns a 64% probability to a rate hike in September, down from earlier expectations of tighter action. A less aggressive Fed typically benefits precious metals, and the triple-leveraged ETC responds disproportionately to such moves. The product’s structure amplifies both gains and losses by three times the daily return of silver futures, a feature that has punished holders during the recent rout.

Technical indicators suggest the worst of the selling may be behind the market. The Relative Strength Index on the ETC had fallen to deeply oversold territory and now stands at 34.4, pointing to exhaustion among sellers. Yet the metal still faces stiff resistance at the 200-day line, and a sustained breakout would require a further weakening of the dollar or another dovish shift from the Fed.

Beyond the macro backdrop, the long-term case for silver rests on a chronic supply imbalance. The global market is headed for a sixth consecutive annual deficit in 2026, with the shortfall expected to exceed 46.3 million ounces. Industrial demand—particularly from solar manufacturing, which consumes 19% of global supply, along with electric vehicles, semiconductors, and AI data centres—continues to grow. Those physical buyers have largely ignored the paper-market selloff, providing a floor under prices.

The immediate path for the triple-leveraged ETC remains hostage to the next round of US economic data. Should the labour market continue to soften, silver could mount a challenge of the 200-day moving average, driving further outsized gains in the leveraged product. Conversely, any hawkish surprise from the Fed would reignite selling pressure and threaten to wipe out the nascent recovery.
