SK Hynix HBM4E Samples Ship to Nvidia, Stock Soars 308% YTD but Overbought

SK Hynix has fired the latest salvo in the race for artificial-intelligence memory supremacy. The South Korean chipmaker recently shipped first samples of its next-generation HBM4E chips to key customers, including Nvidia. These new modules hit data-transfer speeds of 16 gigabits per second and boast a 20% improvement in energy efficiency, tightening the company’s grip as Nvidia’s lead supplier for high-bandwidth memory.

The timing is no coincidence. Intel, the US chip giant, has just poached former SK Hynix chief executive Seok-Hee Lee to lead its advanced chip-packaging and system-integration unit. Industry chatter suggests SK Hynix is already testing Intel’s EMIB packaging technology for its own memory integration – a move that would deepen the ties between logic and memory for AI accelerators. While neither side has confirmed the packaging talks, Lee’s defection has put the supply chain for AI memory chips back in the spotlight.

Investors have embraced the narrative with gusto. SK Hynix shares closed Friday at 2,764,000 won, capping a gain of nearly 29% in just seven days. Since the start of the year, the stock has exploded 308% higher, as the AI frenzy shows no sign of abating.

Technicians, however, are sounding alarms. The relative strength index stands at 73.5, firmly in overbought territory. The share price now sits 59% above its 50-day moving average – an unusually wide gap that often precedes a pullback. With the 52-week high of 2,891,000 won only 4% away, a break above that level would keep the rally alive, while a rejection could trigger rapid profit-taking.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

Underpinning the stock’s meteoric rise are genuine operating numbers. In the latest quarter, SK Hynix generated 52.5 trillion won in revenue and 37.6 trillion won in operating profit. The company holds net liquidity of 35 trillion won, a war chest needed to fund the next wave of AI memory capacity and advanced packaging investments.

Macro tailwinds are also blowing in the company’s favour. South Korea’s semiconductor exports surged 205% in the first ten days of June, now accounting for nearly 39% of the country’s total overseas shipments. Broader Korean exports rose 86% over the same period, underscoring the nation’s reliance on chip sales.

The coming days will test whether the rally can hold. South Korea releases consumer-confidence data on Monday and business-sentiment numbers on Wednesday. Later in the week, US inflation figures due Thursday could sway global interest-rate expectations, with knock-on effects for tech stocks. Strong macro prints would validate the current valuation; weaker ones, against an annualized volatility of almost 96%, could spark a rapid sell-off.

SK Hynix at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

For now, SK Hynix sits at the intersection of product leadership, strategic talent moves and frothy market sentiment. The question is whether the three can keep the momentum going – or whether the overbought signals finally catch up.
