SK Hynix Shares Shed 8% in a Single Session as Geopolitical Jitters and NAND Fears Collide

The sell-off gripping Seoul’s semiconductor sector has claimed its latest victim. SK Hynix shares tumbled 8.34 percent on Friday to close at 1,759,000 won, dragging the broader KOSPI index down 5.72 percent and triggering a rare “sidecar” circuit breaker that halts program trading during extreme volatility. The move marks the latest leg in a brutal 30-day slide that has erased nearly a third of the stock’s value.
The trigger came from halfway around the world. Reports of a potential large-scale US military strike against Iran sent shockwaves through Asian markets, with both the KOSPI and the tech-heavy KOSDAQ activating their sidecar mechanisms on the same day. Samsung Electronics suffered a similar fate, also falling roughly 8 percent. The timing could hardly have been worse: just 24 hours earlier, the KOSPI had closed at 7,096.89 points, up 4.40 percent, only to surrender the 7,000-point threshold within a single session.
Wall Street added to the pressure. The Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq all closed in negative territory overnight, with the Nasdaq shedding more than 2 percent. That weak handoff landed on an already jittery Asian market, amplifying the sell-off.
NAND Price Worries Compound the Damage
Geopolitics alone didn’t drive the rout. Industry-specific concerns about falling NAND flash memory prices in the second half of 2027 have been weighing on sentiment. While analysts describe those fears as overblown, they acknowledge that a price correction in NAND has become more likely. DRAM pricing and the broader AI investment wave remain unaffected for now.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?
Kim Young-gun of Mirae Asset Securities sees the sell-off as a front-running of risk. The price decline already reflects concerns about memory pricing, he argues, recommending that investors build positions at the bottom based on fundamentals. Mirae Asset trimmed its second-quarter earnings estimate for SK Hynix by 12 percent to 62.3 trillion won, citing lower DRAM and NAND price assumptions, but maintained its buy rating and 4.2 million won price target.
Valuation Reset Creates a Mixed Picture
The correction has dramatically repriced the stock. SK Hynix now trades at an expected price-to-book ratio of 4.4 and a price-to-earnings ratio of 5.1. That’s a far cry from the 52-week high of 2,987,000 won reached on June 25 — a level the current price undershoots by more than 41 percent.
Adding to the noise, market observers report that some Asian hedge funds are selling stakes in both Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to free up capital for the upcoming IPO of Chinese memory chip maker ChangXin Technology, which lists on July 27.
The Earnings Test Looms
The sell-off arrives just days before a critical catalyst. SK Hynix reports second-quarter results on July 29, and some of the recent pressure likely reflects positioning ahead of that release. Analysts expect record revenue and record profit, driven by the ongoing supercycle in AI memory chips. Consensus estimates point to revenue growth of more than 250 percent year-over-year, fueled by aggressive DRAM price increases.
SK Hynix at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
But headline numbers alone won’t be enough this time. Investors will scrutinize management’s outlook on HBM4 production yields and demand stability from key customers like Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon. Confirmed long-term contracts or direct investments from those tech giants into SK Hynix’s production lines could stabilize the stock. A signal of cooling HBM growth, by contrast, could extend the correction into the third quarter.
Despite the recent carnage, SK Hynix shares remain up 170.74 percent year-to-date. The question now is whether the July 29 earnings report can validate the AI memory thesis that drove those gains — or whether the market has already begun to price in a different story.
