Societe Generale (FR0000130809) has disclosed a marked reduction of its stake in UK betting group Entain, bringing its holding below the 5 percent threshold. The Paris-based lender, a constituent of the CAC 40 index on Euronext Paris, reported the change in a regulatory filing cited by Investing.com.

What the filing shows

According to a market report from Investing.com, Societe Generale cut its total voting rights in Entain to 4.34 percent as of June 23. The position had previously stood at 5.00 percent of total voting rights.

The filing details that 4.29 percent of Entain’s voting rights are now held through shares, with a further 0.05 percent via financial instruments such as cash-settled contracts for difference that expire between January 2028 and March 2028. The notification was filed with Entain on June 24, following the threshold breach on June 23.

Why this matters for the bank

The Entain stake is part of Societe Generale’s broader trading and investment book, which complements its core corporate and investment banking activities alongside peers such as BNP Paribas. Large position changes in listed groups can affect risk-weighted assets and capital allocation in the investment bank.

Societe Generale has in recent years focused on simplifying its balance sheet and improving returns in equity and derivatives activities, an area where the group is historically strong in Europe. External commentators frequently monitor such stake disclosures to gauge the bank’s risk appetite and portfolio rotation.
